Ambrose oladipupo Campbell: played highlife,Jazz, rock and JuJu, most of his songs have been sampled by many local and foreign renown artists .

Ambrose Campbell (19 August 1919 – 22 June 2006) was a Nigerian musician and bandleader. He is credited with forming Britain's first ever black band, the West African Rhythm Brothers, in the 1940s, and was also acknowledged by Fela Kuti as "the father of modern Nigerian music".[1] He worked with British jazz musicians in the 1950s, and later toured and recorded with Leon Russell in the US, where he lived for thirty years.source: Wikipedia

This is one of those names that's a title of a book (by Cyprian Ekwensi), a song and a tv series. I was shocked when the song was played on Big Brother Nigeria (2006) and the house-mates did not know what the song was. Well, at least they had heard of the tv series (I think it was Ebuka that referred to the tv series).

By the way, the first time I ever saw Richard Mofe-Damijo was on the tv series (Jagua Nana's Daughter, NTA, 1987). He was credited as Evans Mofe-Damijo.

This song reminds me of night parties (unfortunately night parties went extinct in the early '90s because of the economic and security situation in the country at that time). People usually went down low during the drum solo.

In conclusion.

That picture of Nelly Uchendu in front of a mixer was at the back of the album sleeves. I can't remember what was at the front. Mamausa was the first song on side A and Jesu Chelum was the second song. There was a remix (or another version) of Mamausa on side B.

I had Wakaabout on an audio cassette. I didn't have Love Nwantiti, but it was everywhere.

I can't remember the other songs that were on the album.

I'm off to Discogs to see if I am correct.

This is pure gold. Pure gold!

Stop what ever you are doing and listen to this. Just listen to this.

Nelly Uchendu - Mamausa (1978).

No language was beyond his reach; Yoruba, Igbo, even Ghanaian languages (as you can hear on this track), nothing was too much for him.

The highlife you re talking about is a modified form of jazz and funk, it was pop music in those days.

Pop means popular music, so they re all pop , just the period in which they were popular, veno marioghe's music qualifies . angry

You were not even born when the so called highlife was popular why are you forming? Go and eat some indomie. grin

Bro there's one song I've been looking for all my life, I don't know the title or artist. I think it was a sound track to an NTA soap back in the day. I used to think the song was done by ukaonu club.
The song talks about a beautiful girl called Angelina from owerri whom refused to get married .
The song goes this way " owerri maramma anuganu should in case I hungu onye ganugi I'm sorry aka mmu adigiya.

Spoken word to music.
From the '69 Los Angeles Sessions

Fela Ransome-Kuti And Nigeria 70 - Viva Nigeria.

This is brother Fela Ransome-Kuti.

This is one time that I will like to say a few things.
Men are born, kings are made, treaties are signed, wars are fought.
Every country has its own problems,
So has Nigeria,
So has Africa.

Let us bind our wounds
And live together in peace.
Nigeria, one nation indivisible.
Long live Nigeria, viva Africa.

The history of mankind is full of obvious turning points and significant events.
Though tongue and tribe may differ,
We are all Nigerians,
We are all Africans.

War is not the answer.
It has never been the answer,
And it will never be the answer,
Fighting amongst each other.
Let's live together in peace.
Nigeria, one nation indivisible,
Long live Nigeria, viva Africa.

Let's eat together like we used to eat,
Let's plan together like we used to plan,
Sing together like we used to sing,
Dance together like we used to dance.
United we stand, divided we fall.
You know what I mean.

Let us bind our wounds and live together in peace.
Ling live Nigeria, viva Africa.

Brothers and sisters in Africa.
Never should we learn to wage war against each other.
Let Nigeria be a lesson to all.
We have more to learn towards building than destroying.
Our people can't afford anymore suffering.
Let's join hands Africa.
We have nothing to lose, but a lot to gain.

War is not the answer,
War has never been the answer,
And it will never be the answer,
Fighting amongst each other.
One nation indivisible,
Long live Nigeria,
Viva Africa!

This is one of the most famous highlife songs from Ghana and nobody knows who originally sang it. Almost everybody that played highlife music in Ghana has a version of the song.

This is E.T. Mensah's version

And this is Victor Olaiya's 2016 cover of his 1960s version.

Orlando Owoh also sang a version of this song, but it's not on YouTube.

That Kangaroo song always makes me laugh, right from the first time that I heard it.

The first reason for my laughter is Orlando Owoh's Pidgin English. I don't know why, but it sounds funny to me.

The second reason is that the subject of the song is a Kangaroo.

The third reason is the story in the song. A lot of rich people approached Kangaroo because they wanted to marry her, but she refused to marry them and instead insisted that she would marry a poor man. She married the poor man and became a problem for him because she wanted a lot of luxuries.

naptu2:
This is the famous Kangaroo.

"Oh kangaroo
Oh kangaroo
As you beautiful also you proud too much
Oh kangaroo"

Orlando Owoh - Kangaroo (1990).

I assume that everybody knows what Alagbon is, but I think I need to explain in case I'm wrong.

Alagbon Close is the name of a street that is just off Ikoyi Road. It is not far from Ijeh Barracks, Radio Nigeria, State House and the Federal Secretariat.

There is a notorious police station that is on that close and that's what most people are referring to when they say "Alagbon".

That station has been the home of many important units, most notably the Federal Criminal and Investigation Bureau (the famous CID).

A lot of famous people have been detained there and in fact, that's where coupists were actually meant to be detained (before Obasanjo's decree). A lot of coupists have been detained there.

Orlando Owoh was detained there and that's why he sang that song.

naptu2:
I was going to post this in the morning when I thought I was free.

This man is one of three people that I thought were perennially appearing in court. I couldn't even remember what he was charged with when I wanted to post this in the morning, but I remember that he would appear on the NTA News almost once a week because they were reporting about his appearance in court.

If I remember correctly, his legal problems started around 1986 and lasted till around 1988. He was charged with being in possession of hard drugs, but many people believed that he was actually arrested because of his song about Dele Giwa.

The other two people that often appeared in court were Fred Ajidua (c1992 till the Goodluck Jonathan Administration) and the man that I had a strange encounter with. That man's legal problems began in 1993 or '94 and lasted till sometime when the Olusegun Obasanjo Administration was in office.

This song is about his Prison Experience and although I know the real name of the song, I call it "Alagbon" (the chorus went,

"I remember officer at Alagbon
I remember suspect at Alagbon
I remember sections at Alagbon" ).

(I wish I could find his X-rated attack on President Ibrahim Babangida, but I can't remember the name of the song).

Orlando Owoh - Experience (1988).

I am posting this because of the second song.

naptu2:
Number 1.

There are no words that can properly describe how much I love this song. It's actually a Nigerian Army song, but this record was released by the Nigerian Police Band sometime around 1959/1960 to mark Nigeria's independence.

Check out the insults that are directed at their superiors.
