The sight of school-age children parading major roads and highways across Lagos State has become an unpleasant scene. These child traffic beggars harass drivers and pedestrians on busy intersections and expressways every day with prayers and bowls of alms, crouching at their feet and pleading with passersby for a token.

These street beggars are quick to cling to the shirts, trousers, and skirts of commuters and passersby.

Some of them are even more audacious in their tactics, clinging to slowly moving vehicles on the road.

Despite their young age, they have teamed up with their parents to rely on the public for their livelihood.

Street begging, especially by children that should be in the classroom has become a prevailing situation at bustling bus stops and intersections across the metropolis.

Some of these kids have gotten more creative about it. They now incorporate a dash of industry and emotional blackmail to win public sympathy.

For instance, it is common to see children competing to clean windscreens at traffic light intersections and roundabouts. They are typically equipped with a car windscreen mopping brush and a small container of liquid soap.

They would suddenly appear next to the motorist, wiping the windscreen with their mopping brush.

Many people question why such young children, often between the ages of 3 and 13, are allowed to walk around these fast-moving traffic on highways, constantly running the risk of being run over or killed by negligent drivers.

There are also women who utilize their infants as tools for begging.

While some of these child traffic beggars are actually in need, others are just trying to take advantage of Lagosians who are renowned for charity.

The growing number of children beggars in Lagos has become an eyesore since they are a security threat, an environmental problem, and a nuisance.

Some of these beggars have occasionally been found to be fronts for daring criminals.

My heart breaks for those helpless kids. They do not merit the treatment their parents or guardians has meted out to them.

By the way, I believed Lagos State had a legislation prohibiting this kind of child abuse. Child Rights Law should be strictly enforced in Lagos State. These are clearly cases of child abuse and child labour.

The Ministry of Youth, Sports and Social Development ought to ensure that promoters of these child-beggars are dealt with. These children are supposed to be in school instead of the streets.

In August 2021, the Lagos State Government announced that anyone caught using children to beg risked being jailed for 10 years.

Sadly, Lagos State has developed a reputation for being strong on policy and law formulation, but weak on enforcement.

This is what you get when you prioritize religion over common sense.

We know the terrorist religion that produces these kind of people and where they mostly come from.

This is terrible indeed! There's a law against street beggars. The Child Rights Act also takes care of this. They should be in school.

If it is not developed, how would they have thought of coming to beg in Lagos in the first place? Why will they leave their regions and cities if they don't think Lagos is better than theirs in term of riches? It may be hard for you to believe that if they are caught now and investigated, it may be one chukuma, Ndubisi or Chika that is behind this type of begging business recruiting these vulnerable poor children getting his/her delivery.

Sure, you see them as northerners, but somebody from Ipob far east may be behind this begging network tricks. They can inject and inflate stomach of vulnerable children like motor tube just because of money to beg on the street of Lagos. Until masquerade behind this is nabbed, your guess may be as mine, "real-developer" that has developed India, Ghana, Cambodia and many other places may be behind this begging network, just relax, and let the veil on masquerade be removed by police

We all think we are catching cruise without realising we a re damaging Nigeria further with tribalism and clannish hatred of others.

Where are these kids from? 99% Northern Nigeria. Who failed them? Their respective Governors in their respective States of the North. Yet Lagos and Tinubu is now somehow more responsible for them than leaders of the State they fled from?

You dare talk m0r0nically insinuating Tinubu and Lagos administrators, despite the State being smallest and most populous in Nigeria, should just continue to accept massive influx of Nigerians daily from other failed State and be miraculously providing for all of them?

Why not propose all 230 million Nigerians leave their States and all converge on Lagos? If Lagos then does not manage to feed all those Nigerians 3 meals a day then we go and grab Tinubu, Sanwo Olu, Fashola etal from their homes for public execution.

Useless reasoning from dead brains. What are the other Governors of Nigeria doing for Lagos to be carrying so much burden? Smallest State in Nigeria yet hosting 23 million folks that is about 10% of Nigeria's total population? Your a clown. Seriously.

Let's start telling ourselves the truth na. Shebi we all get working brain?

What "child welfare" can cope with an irresponsible adult population where one unemployed man thinks he can marry 5 women and have 25 kids without the income to give those children a secure and sound upbringing that will make them productive members of society rather than a menace to others?

I just don't ubderstand Nigerians. We are all personally irresponsible, negligent and ignorant yet we expect leaders to solve all problems for us.

Why has Nigeria not put a compulsory limit on children per household, perhaps like 2 per household, as China did to curb population explosion that was threatening the future of China?

It is because we cannot talk honestly to each other to accept personal responsibility. Northerner will tell you it is his religious right to marry ten wives and bear 30 children.

Southerners will feel it is okay to impregnate women up and down who then deliver kids destined to be future cultist and killers because no father is taking care of them.

I will just never understand why we cannot see that the progress of Nigeria will comefrom.all of us taking responsibility for our actions.and choices.

Bro, that "good government" argument is a myth. Why do you need to teach any adult about the simplistic concept of not having kids they do not have the means to raise?

Please what concerns government with that tragic reality that has gotten Nigeria into serious trouble?

Despite being comfortable and fairly wealthy, I deliberately chose to have two kids I can give the best life has to offer.

Yet family members who trouble me daily for money have 5 kids or so. Bro, not a "good government" issue at all.

The average Nigerian is warped and irresponsible. Buhari, to his credit, mooted an APC family planning policy to limit the outrageous number of kids Nigerians are having that our limited resources cannot cope with. You can Google it.

Yet PMB backed down when he saw the protest from a people resistive to positive change yet will blame him for all their woes. Only God can deliver Nigeria.

It's the same child welfare that should curb irresponsible reproduction.

Children below the age of 16 are regarded as minors in most nations of the world meaning adult make make decisions in their best interest.

If Adults are as irresponsible and thoughtless as Nigerian adults are then there is going to be nothing like "child welfare".

An adult who thinks God will provide, when he jumps irresponsibly on his wife without condom, is not thinking about child welfare.
