The war in Ukraine has made nonsense of the slow economic recovery around the world post Covid.

The IMF gave a grim forecast of what is to come next year.

But already, the largest economies in the world are slowing and undergoing severe stress owing to increasing prices of commodities and energy.

The worst hit has been sub saharan Africa and Asia. In Lebenon, customers are breaking into banks with guns to get their money as banks won't pay them.
In Sudan where i am currently, prices of goods are outrageously expensive. Commuting between short distances costs thousands of Sudanese pounds. You can't blame them, the price of a liter of PMS is over 800sdg. On paper though, the Sudanese pound should be stronger than the Naira as the exchange rate is 580sdg/dollar.
To get a simple haircut will cost you 1500sdg.

Although the economic crunch is biting hard in Nigeria too, you need to go around or listen to international news outlets to know we're in a better position compared to many countries especially in Africa.

In fact, this is the best time for us to become a world economic giant.

First, rising energy prices (which will get worse) shouldn't affect us as we have an abundance of crude oil.

Second, rising food prices (which will get worse according to IMF) shouldn't affect us as we are blessed with arable farmland which can grow all our food including wheat which has become a problem no thanks to the war in Ukraine.
We only have to fix our security issues.

Third, Europe is looking elsewhere for gas supplies as cheap Russian gas has proven unreliable. Nigeria has a huge reserve of gas
which will not only fetch us a lot of money but also make us an important power broker in energy supplies.

Right now what we urgently need is intelligent leadership so we don't let this opportunity fritter away.
