October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and while we all know that breast cancer is a serious disease, there are many unknowns about it. Here are ten facts about breast cancer that you probably didn't know.

1. Anyone, regardless of age, race, or gender, can develop breast cancer. While women are more likely to be diagnosed with breast cancer, men can also be affected. In their lifetime, one in every 1,000 men will be diagnosed with breast cancer.

2. As you get older, your chances of getting breast cancer rise. Breast cancer is most commonly diagnosed in women over the age of 50. This does not, however, mean that younger women are immune to the disease. Women under the age of 45 account for roughly 10% of all new breast cancer cases.

3. A family history of breast cancer is a major risk factor. If a first-degree relative (mother, sister, or daughter) has been diagnosed with breast cancer, your risk of developing the disease skyrockets.

4. Breast cancer can occur without a family history of the disease.

5. There are various types of breast cancer and each responds differently to a treatment. Ductal carcinoma, which begins in the milk ducts and accounts for 80% of all cases, is the most common type. Other types include lobular carcinoma (which begins in the milk glands), inflammatory breast cancer (which is uncommon but aggressive), and Paget's disease (a rare form that affects the nipple).

6. For survival rates, early detection is critical. When detected early, breast cancer has a nearly 100% 5-year survival rate. If the disease is not detected until it has spread to other parts of the body, the 5-year survival rate drops to 27%. This is why annual mammograms beginning at the age of 40 are so important.

7. A lump in the breast tissue is only one of many possible symptoms of breast cancer. Changes in the size or shape of the breasts, discharge from the nipple, changes in skin texture (such as dimpling), and redness or swelling around the nipple or breast area are all possible symptoms.

8 Not all lumps are dangerous; in fact, the majority of lumps turn out to be harmless (noncancerous). However, if you notice any changes in your breasts, you should see a doctor right away so that anything serious can be ruled out.

9. Alcohol consumption, obesity, and cigarette smoking are all risk factors for developing breast cancer. Birth control pills and hormone replacement therapy may also increase your risk of developing breast cancer.

10. There are numerous breast cancer treatments available, and which one you receive will be determined by several factors, including the type and stage of cancer, your age, and your overall health.

We hope that this article has been informative and helpful. If you are a woman, it is important to be aware of the risk factors for breast cancer and to know the symptoms. The earlier breast cancer is detected, the better the chances of successful treatment. Sign up today for free on roHealth to get health insurance and access to our online health resources.
