Hundreds of thousands of users are reporting on Twitter that WhatsApp is currently experiencing an outage.

Messages are not sending between users and it seems like server issues are responsible.

A similar outage occurred last year in October where Meta’s suite of platforms were down for 6 hours.

On Tuesday morning, hundreds of thousands of users across the globe rushed to Twitter to complain that they were unable to use WhatsApp in a myriad of different languages, all united in their lack of communication.

“WhatsApp” is currently the top trend in South African Twitter as of time of writing, and seems with over 300 thousand tweets and counting it may be one of the top trends globally.

Users on DownDetector.com have been reporting outages on Meta’s top communication platform since around 09:00 this morning, leading to a massive abrupt spike in reports.

We have tried to send messages on the app but they just load. We tried around 09:29 and as of 09:43 they still have not sent.

According to WABetaInfo, the app is experiencing an issue with connecting to the server. This is the closest we’ll get to an official update as WhatsApp does not maintain any official channels for the reporting of connectivity issues.

WhatsApp is the world’s largest chat platform with over 2 billion users. It is the third largest social media platform on Earth behind Facebook and YouTube.

The service, along with Meta’s other social media platforms in Instagram and Facebook, faced a similar outage last year in October. At that time Meta blamed the 6-hour outage on a “faulty configuration change.”

Mark Zuckerberg had to issue an apology to Meta’s roughly 3.5 billion users across all of its platforms. “Sorry for the disruption today – I know how much you rely on our services to stay connected with the people you care about,” he said at the time.

Right now it seems the outages are limited to WhatsApp.

Countless people around the world rely on the service for work or to communicate with families, and these mass outages always remind us that we need to have other methods in place to be able to reach the people we care about.
