Former President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan has called on the National Assembly to consider a law mandating governorship and presidential aspirants to contest primaries as a pair in order to reduce friction between themselves and their deputies.

He decried the frosty relationship between governors and their deputies which made it impossible for many governors to nominate their deputies to take over from them.

Jonathan spoke at the book launch in honour of Governor Abdullahi Ganduje titled ‘Deputising And Governance In Nigeria’.

He advocated the need for constitutionally defined roles for deputy governors and vice presidents in order to make their office functional and relevant.

Deputy Governors in Zamfara and Oyo states were recently impeached over political differences with their governors.

If that be the best way for both contesters to be fully united.

Then is a welcome development.

Much of the same on the Philippines where the president and the vice are elected on seperate tickets, with the likelihood of the system throwing up a president and a vice from seperate parties like they had Joseph Estrada and Gloria Arroyo in the early 2000s.

Well, such an experiment would be welcome here.

That's not a good idea as far as I am concerned. It will create two drivers in one boat and thereby create more problems than the one it intended to solve. I think the best solution is to make political parties very strong so they can watch over their elected officials.
