Dan Shapero explains on "Think Big" three things to overcome in having more effective conversations (argument).

Summarily and in addition,

1. Identity: To understand oneself, core beliefs, and core values and maintain such standards in discussions or conversations. Don't lose yourself trying to top a conversation.

2. Appreciation: we often overlook this because we want to dominate a conversation and or argument. It doesn't take anything from us to patiently listen and understand the views of the other person by commending/ appreciating them. This does not mean we accept it

3. Affiliation: Find a common ground between the two involved. Don't see the conversation as a competition or threat to one another.

Imagine employing this in our discussion of political issues, amongst others - we would rather have resolutions to take us forward than pull us back.
