Although he’s not familiar to many mainstream superhero fans who stick to the movies and don’t read the comic books, Black Adam is undoubtedly one of the most awesome characters in the DC universe. Dwayne Johnson has been cast to play him on the big screen in the DCEU.

Black Adam was supposed to appear in Shazam!, but the studio decided to save him for his own solo movie. It’s not getting as much buzz as Matt Reeves’ Batman reboot or Ezra Miller’s Flash movie, but there are plenty of reasons to be excited for Johnson’s upcoming Black Adam solo outing.

1. It’ll Be Connected To Shazam!
The DCEU’s Black Adam movie grew out of a planned cameo appearance that the character was supposed to make in Shazam!. After starring in his own solo movie, Black Adam will appear in the Shazam! sequel. The box office failure of Justice League made Warner Bros. rethink the DCEU strategy and focus on standalone stories.

2. It’ll Maintain The Comics’ Gritty, Violent Tone
According to producer Hiram Garcia, the Black Adam movie will maintain the gritty, violent tone from the comics. This will be in stark contrast to the lighthearted comedic tone of Shazam!, of which this is a spin-off of sorts.

3. The Character Has Been Turned Into An Antihero
In the days of yore, Black Adam was written as a pretty straightforward villain. He was an evil dude who posed a threat to the Shazam Family and that was that.

But in more recent years, comic book writers Geoff Johns, David S. Goyer, and Jerry Ordway have recharacterized Adam as a more complex antihero.

4. Jaume Collet-Serra Is A Master Of Genre Thrills
At their core, superhero movies are genre movies. The exact genre frameworks vary from movie to movie — Captain America: The Winter Soldier is a spy thriller, while Wonder Woman is a WWI adventure — but they’re always genre stories in one form or another.

5. It’ll Introduce The JSA To The DCEU
While plot details are scarce for Black Adam, it has been confirmed that the Justice Society of America will factor into the movie somehow. Compared to the Justice League, the JSA is kind of a B-team, but it still has some brilliant characters.

From Hawkman to Spectre to Atom, there are plenty of interesting superheroes that could be introduced to the DCEU via the JSA in Black Adam.
