Positions in this field range from those on ships to those at ports and the wider marine industry. The income ranges from position to position, but in general, employers provide a generous compensation package.

Here are a few of the highest-paying positions in the maritime industry:

Ship Captains: Captains of ships earn the most money of anyone working on board. They’re in charge of keeping the ship and everyone on it safe. Captains need to be well-versed in all aspects of sailing and maritime law. Their average annual pay is between $70,000 and $120,000.

Naval Architects: Earnings for naval architects average $98,000 per year. They are the ones who come up with the plans and build the watercraft.



Marine Cargo Inspectors: Marine cargo inspectors bring home an average annual wage of $86,000. For reasons of both safety and security, it is their job to inspect all shipments.



Marine Pilots: The typical income for a marine pilot is $85,000 per year. They ensure that vessels operating in coastal and interior waters do so safely.



Ship Officers: Officers on board are in charge of running the ship’s systems, such as propulsion, communications, and more. The average annual compensation for one of these people is between $40,000 and $60,000.

Marine Engineers: To keep the ship’s engines and other systems running well, it takes the expertise of marine engineers. Their average annual compensation is between $50,000 and $70,000.
