Those that used Intensive English in Secondary School like myself will remember the story of the crafty tortoise and a group of birds that flew to visit God and to question him on why there was famine on earth.

The story was told of how an unqualified Tortoise with a smooth shell cunningly convinced the birds to each give him a feather in order to fly with them to honor the meeting.

During the flight, crafty Tortoise told them to each choose a nickname (Odova) by which the celestials will identify them with.

The birds, unaware of Tortoise’s ulterior intention, agreed and chose different names for themselves, each according to what appealed to it. Tortoise chose for himself “all of you” as a nickname and the flight continued.

When they arrived, the heavens received them in glamour. The meeting soon commenced and resolutions were reached without hitches, then it was time for refreshment.

The heavens made available the best of it’s cuisines for a feast to the delegation. In fact there was too much food to eat and wines to drink. The birds were excited and just when they were to commence dining, Tortoise struck, telling them to hold on.

He signaled to one of the servers and asked, to whom have you served these food and wines.

The server replied him; “To all of you”. Then Tortoise turned to the birds and reminded them of the names that they chose when coming.

In a twinkle of an eye, Tortoise cornered everything to himself since the server specifically mentioned that the food was made available for “all of you”, which was the nickname he chose.

Painfully, the birds watched as Tortoise feasted alone, eating and drinking what belonged to all. In anger they began to retrieve their feathers one after the other and started flying back home.

However, one of the birds said to be the angriest stayed back watching as Tortoise consumed everything. After retrieving it’s feather, Tortoise realizing that he could no longer fly back home, told the bird to please take a message to his lovely wife.

The message was for her to bring out all the soft things in their home, so he can jump down and land on them without hurting himself. The bird took the instruction to the wife but rather than soft things, the bird twisted the message for the wife to bring out all the hard objects that they owned.

The wife brought out hard objects including shovels, spears, grinding stones, knives, pots, wood etc and arranged them all for Tortoise to jump.

From the sky, Tortoise could see his wife arranging stuffs but couldn’t tell that she was bringing out hard objects. He took the jump from the sky when the wife was done arranging and fell with a loud thud, shattering it’s beautiful shell.

Now the current wave of resignations that you see hitting the PDP can be likened to the aggrieved birds in the story above, retrieving their feathers hitherto given to the Betrayer-in-Chief, Governor Okowa who has cunningly cornered everything to himself like Tortoise did.

His greatest nightmare will be the most pained amongst them i.e the likes of Governor Wike and his bandwagon of loyal Governors, South and Middle Belt Elders Forum, Former Governors, James Ibori and Ewetan Uduaghan (his daughter’s truncated ambition), ex and serving lawmakers, notably, James Manager and others who may not openly resign from the party but will work from within to ensure that the great fall is inevitable.
