On October 31st, people all over the world celebrate Halloween. The name Halloween comes from the night before All Saints' Day (also known as All Hallows' Day). Western Christians observe this day as the beginning of the three-day festival known as Allhallowtide, which culminates on All Souls' Day. It is generally accepted that Halloween celebrations in Europe and North America are secular and appropriate for children.
 
 
The First Halloween
The Celtic festival Samhain, celebrated in ancient Britain and Ireland, is the forerunner to modern Halloween. Samhain began on the modern equivalent of the 1st of November. The dead were thought to return to their homes during the Samhain holiday. The souls of those who had died that year were said to leave for the hereafter. Bonfires were lit atop hills to ward off evil spirits, and people often hid their identities behind masks and other disguises for fear of being seen by the ghosts they believed to be lurking there. In light of this, supernatural entities including witches, hobgoblins, fairies, and demons have become commonly linked with Halloween.
Pope Boniface IV of the seventh century is credited with designating May 13 as All Saints' Day. As the centuries progressed, the date was shifted to November 1. It was on October 31st, the night before All Saints' Day when the holiday known as Halloween (All Hallows' Eve) was first observed. Not until the middle of the nineteenth century did Halloween become a secular holiday. An influx of people, many of them Irish, came to the United States in the middle of the nineteenth century, bringing with them a love of Halloween traditions. The twentieth century saw Halloween rise to prominence as a major American event, especially for kids.
