Medical interpretation is a sensitive niche of the medical industry. It requires thorough professionalism, detailed knowledge, and in-depth research about the medical terminology in the target as well as the source language. Medical interpreters are needed during the process of sensitive and delicate moments which involve patients, doctors, caregivers, and clinicians during medical situations and emergencies.

The services of medical interpreters are inevitable for the doctors and physicians to make the right and correct diagnosis, explain the process of treatment and discuss the medical history of the patients. It is also important to note that it is not something that can be done by anyone with limited medical and hospital knowledge. It is mandatory to facilitate a patient who speaks a different language as the right diagnosis and relevant treatment is the best thing to follow. Interpretation is also needed when clinical research is conducted and patients have to be made aware of the risks of taking part in the research.

Types of medical interpretation

Medical interpretation services have three main types. It also depends on the availability of the interpreter as well as the resources of healthcare institutions. It also depends on the seriousness of the situation. A lot of cases require the interpreter to be present at the site while at times the telephonic interpretation can also serve the purpose.

Face-to-face or in-person medical interpreting

This type of interpretation requires the medical interpreter to be present physically with the patients and the healthcare providers. It is the best solution and the best way to facilitate the patient. It is particularly important for situations where there is an emergency and the details are critical to know or for the medical act. Interpreters not only help bridge the language gap but can also add comfort and support to the patients. This is the most expensive type of interpretation.

Telephone interpreting

This is quite economical and this also costs less however the experts have their concerns about the quality of the telephonic interpretations. As they believe medical language interpretation services are best delivered on the site. When interpreters cannot see their patients and physicians, they are likely to miss the vital information that may help in the right diagnosis and treatment. It could be uncomfortable and also may lack information while working with older patients and children. Telephonic interpretation is not recommended in serious scenarios where there are serious diagnosis and treatment plan has to be discussed.

Video interpreting

This is quite similar to the telephonic one with a video though. The interpreter at least can see the patients and hospital staff which can be useful for the case. It is important particularly when the patient suffers through difficulties while explaining symptoms and medical history which is an extremely important step to continue with the treatment overseas. However, it is beneficial in emergency situations.

Hiring professional interpreters

It is of foremost importance to hire medical interpreters who know their craft well. This is a serious and sensitive job where the person has to interpret the situation of a patient or have to tell the patient about the physician’s findings. Any mistake or negligence can go long way and can also bring severe consequences. Medical interpretation and medical device translation require maximum accuracy. That is also important because the interpreter has to transfer and convey the message which may influence the medical decisions of the patients.

Importance of relevant expertise and training

Many times people prefer their family members or ad hoc interpreters to do the job and explain their condition. However, it is not the language pair always that is needed, these people don’t contain any training or experience in professional medical interpretation. However, many times the hospital staff has to take the decision of making social workers, nurses, and doctors interpreters when there are no other substitutes or professional linguists.

However, despite proficiency in both languages, it is important to understand that medical training and expertise for smooth communication within a medical context. It does not only go with the interpretation but is also important for the medical text overall. Medical device translation services are also mandatory to launch the medical equipment and devices overseas. So translation services should be mandatory to cater to every type of audience in our region and country.

Medical content is overall tough and complex and therefore be it's about the interpretation or medical device translation companies the relevant expertise, training, and qualification are extremely important.

Final words

Medical interpretation is important in situations where customers can and physicians can not wait for the translation process to complete and comprehend. It has three types which include video, telephonic, and face-to-face interpretation. Every process requires particular effort and dedication. Also when it is about the medical text and content the matter gets more serious and complex.
