@iyke, Oga if u have bills to pay and u live in Nigeria U will come to terms with reality sooner than later.
Re: deleted by olanajim(m): 12:10pm On Aug 23, 2007
What then are you people trying to say? That engineering is unworthy profession? That the graduates are idiots? Or that the country is having problem with her engineering graduates? Or simply put, engineering has no place in Naija?
Re: deleted by doncnn(m): 12:16pm On Aug 23, 2007
mr iyke or engineer iyke or whatever, u didnt even tell us wot u ve been able to invent or where u work. atleast dat can encourage us. but let me tell u the gospel truth, no engr under normal cercumstances will want to work in a bank, even the bank emplyers know dat too b4 emplying u. but jus because of the prevailing suitation most engineers find themselves there, but there are once who still like the banks, afaterall, engineering has has a lot to offer in the banking industry, but come to think of it, what will it profit u if u work in an engineering firm where u r paid jus 30 or 40k per month where ur fellow engineers who bank in the bank are paid times 4 of wot u r paid, they marry, buy cars, pay for their relatives school fees and may even build houses, where as u are there, still sruggling with the MOLUE heading to AJ city, MY GUY WAKE UP, in dis situation, i think THE END JUSTIFIES THE MEANS, because WOT MATTERS IS, are u comfortable.
Re: deleted by okeyz(m): 6:10pm On Aug 23, 2007
well i never wanted to comment on this thread but some comments from some people has made me to do otherwise
first and foremost we have to differentiate those u did engineering becos of the interest for the course and those who did just 4 the money.engineering is one of the best courses to be taught in the university, look around you everything that makes a man comfortable has been produced by engineers!,the problem with nigeria is that our leaders are not ready to face the technological challenges that the engineering profession requires, everything is politized, just as you have engineers working in banks so u have some people that read sociology working in these big oil companies based on man know man,and also if you really love the profession and you want to get more out of it by way of high salary, then you should be ready spend more in acquiring certificates in some specialist courses, its quite worrisome to know that these courses is not attainable in Nigeria and the governmnet is shouting about local content!
western nations spend millions in research and when they get a break through they inturn sell this product to other nations at a high profit! Nigeria inclusive ,if you want to get the best give your best and find the best,

In saudi arabia the annual salary for a professional driller with 8 years + experience is about $1m plus and will go higher by the end  of 2007,its becos this country knows the value of highly trained engineers they spend money on training so they invest more on research .

Its just recently that the nnpc is just training some engineers on hysis, pdms and other oil and gas software and i hear the selection is still politized so that is the problem we are having in this country everything is politized even football.Do not be surprised that after the training notting will be heard from this people ,no recruitment will take place and all the training ,time and resources will be one BIG WASTE.they will end up recruiting expatriates for the same job!

I for one has lost faith in the nigerian dream for engineers ,if there was ever one .
I am concentrating in improving myself and find a foreign country that is willing to pay for my service.
There r lots and lots of option outside this nigerian shores ,like benin republic they have started licencing their oil blocks about 30 of them ,liberia ,congo, gabon, angola, sudan, libya, egypt and lots of other african countries ,these countries have started serious oil exploration as such they is need for recruiting engineers at  all levels.

Its quite worrisome to note that a professional body like NSE is doing nothing ,what do u expect them to do ,to me i dont see the need in being a member cos it will not improve ur skills ,it might on paper but that is just where it ends, the NSE in Nigeria do not command respect thats y some companies high enginers and pay them 15k ,take it or leave ,the brains behind the banking industry did their home work well that is y the banking industry is booming but what is NSE doing?

Men its better to be a member of a foreign society like SPE society of petroleum engineers than being a member of NSE,when u do get to be a member u will really understand what i am talking about ,latest update on new technologies ,latest business idea and strategies, wide network of professional friends and peers, international connections and seminars and lots more ,it beats being an NSE member!
as for the banking industry, they have really worked hard to bring around a boom in their profession ,it is a challenge to the Engineering societies in this country to do the same .
I will stop here until some one tempts me again.

Bros please take it easy, sho!!!!!!!!!!!!!, no too dey vex like dat, i think the most important person here is YOU , the change should start from you ,if you take true pride in what you are and the authenticity of the ''kpali'' you carry around , trust me people will come to respect and value that, but first start with your English bro CHANGE IT!!!!!!
Re: deleted by wales4real(m): 8:00am On Aug 24, 2007
I pity u, ur dependants and all ur ex extended families looking up to u for one thing or the other.

Your perception about the whole thing is too myopic.

Men, i dont even know what to tell you.
You have only allowed urself to be dazed. Bringing up a topic of this nature on a site filled multi-talented graduates without a solid argument can only but CRUCIFY you.

Man wake up and live up to ur dreams. Whether you r a BankerEngineeer or an EngineeringBanker, the most important
thing is ur contribution to ur society and getting fulfilled in what u do.

Pls try to make a better argument when next you post a topic that affects our society, so people wont kill u while u r still living.

Mennnnnnnnn i am sorry for you for all the criticisms and abuses raised against u though we know that more than half of Engineering graduates in Nigeria do not speak/write a good English due to their background.

Wake up b4 u end up spending another 6yrs (u spent gathering ur so-called Btech/BEng Kpali) looking for a well paid Engineering jobs in non existing Engrg. firms.
Re: deleted by Spiwes(m): 9:25am On Aug 24, 2007
hmmmm, let me start by congratulating the initiator of this topic for letting the whole house know his level of thinking, and his perception about Nigeria Engineers and Engineering studies in general. I know he might be somewhere laughing because he would think he has gotten peoples people's attention on his LOW MENTALITY reasoning.

Well, my response goes to the house not to the initiator of the topic, and it goes thus:

1} U CAN MAKE WHATEVER U WANT TO MAKE OUT OF URSELF IRRESPECTIVE OF THE COURSE YOU READ IN SCHOOL.

2} YOU CAN BE THE BEST ENGINEER OR OTHERWISE IN THE WHOLE WORLD IF THAT IS YOUR DREAM.

3} THE EXCUSE WHICH THE INITIATOR BROUGHT AS REGARDS OUR SCHOOLS IS BASELESS, BECAUSE THE SCHOOL IS
MEANT TO PUT YOU IN THE RIGHT TRACK FOR YOU TO DEVELOP YOURSELF, THAT IS WHY THE LECTURERS ARE THERE
FOR YOU TO CONSULT AT LEAST IF NOT FOR ANYTHING, BUT IN THE NIGERIAN CONTEXT. WE HAVE FOUND OURSELVES
IN THE SITUATION.

4} NOBODY SAYS FIRST DEGREE IS THE MAXIMUM, AFTER ALL, IF YOU WANT TO DEVELOP YOURSELF FURTHER, YOU CAN
TRAVEL ABROAD AND DO THAT, AND THE NEXT QUESTION IS WHERE DO I GET THE FINANCE FROM.

5} IN VIEW OF THE ABOVE QUESTION, WORKING ANYWHERE INCLUDING BANK TO GENERATE SUCH FUND IS WELCOME

6} MY DEAR NAIRALANDERS, VIRTUALLY ALL PLANS IN NIGERIA IS A MIRAGE IF NO FINANCE. PLS DISREGARD ALL THE
POSTULATES OF THE INITIATOR OF THIS TOPIC AND SEE HOW U CAN DEVELOP URSELF AND UR CHILDREN.

7} I PRAY GOD TO SEE TO OUR DREAMS COMING TRUE SO THAT AT THE END WE WILL ALL REAP THE FRUIT OF OUR
LABOUR.

GOD BLESS U ALL

Re: deleted by okevic: 12:06pm On Aug 24, 2007
my dear nairalanders, i thank all of u who contibuted to this urgly and important trend. to my own opinion, i am a computer engineer by profession. i think my profession is the major challenge i have came through in my life.

for an engineer to work in a ban is not too bad. but concidering the fact that banking work does not meant for engineeers but there are also other areas an engineer can engage himself in the banking sector.

as a qualified computer engineer, i have worked in bank for many years before setting up my own business. i there therefore encourage all our engineers to attach urself wherever u may found yourself for better 2morrow.

i am very proud to be an enterprenuer today and have also employed people of my field. and i look towards increasing my potentials by God's grace.

you must start with something and you will get more. remember that the scripture says , seek ye first first that every other thing will be added unto you.

good lucks
Re: deleted by Cybog: 12:15pm On Aug 24, 2007
I don't see where its written that Engineers must work in banks in order to make it big time. You have choices, and when you make them right, you become big time; not because of the money you are making @ the moment but as a result of the combination of both the satisfaction you derive from it and what u can 'SEE' beyond what anybody would call void.
Re: deleted by Nobody: 12:22pm On Aug 24, 2007
Hello guys!
I cant just help myself by laughing @ most of the replies here? 1 thing w/ in this world is that U hv sound "fucking weird" b4 ppl cn b impressed.
First, I must apologise 2 ppl I did hurt by my post "Bleep Engineers in Banks" this title was nt 4 insults on Engineers working in Banks plzzzzzzzzzzz, it is for the profession being downgraded in the bank industry.
Secondly i wish 2 remind those that are flaring up in up in this forum over my words in my previous post, that I did apologise for those words.
Now, to the true issue, this topic is for our Engineers to regain their consciousness, love, ideas, purpose, their everything in engineering. It's nt all abt d money u knw, we hv 2 really work towards makin our place in this country, Nigeria.
Consider, an advert that ends thus "Only Nigerians studying in UK, USA or other EU countries Can apply for this job", does it not strike the mind of the truly conscious Nigeria Trained-Engineer. I know Professors like Prof Ikokwu(late), Prof Onyekaonwu, etc, they were trained abroad(US & EU) and they are presently respected aboard(US & EU)but they came back 2 Nigeria 2 transfer d knowledge and 2 develop more within their home environment.
For most of U guys out there ranting abt my english, , wel I will nt comment on that.
There is no time for us to analyse our lives, because we keep on moving in time(life is a function of time), that is y i am pausin 4 a while till then, keep it coming.
Re: deleted by obanikoro2(m): 3:28pm On Aug 24, 2007
Here are my observations and comments:

1. I see som people having a strong sentimental attachment to the "f" word to the extent that they cant even say anytin without it. shocked

2. To be honest, iyke_001 is right in so many ways and is passing across a good message but the way he does so is creating more problems than the one he is trying to solve. sad

3. Some guys are neither here nor there; all they know how to do best is throw stones and laugh at people. angry

4. Before we start complaining about what is happening around us and what others are doing that MAY NOT be right; let us take the 1st step in the right direction and by doing so, others will follow. TALKING TO IYKE AND OTHERS (including me) cheesy

5. Another fact/reality: IT IS NOT A MUST U PRACTISE WHAT U STUDIED IN SCHOOL. If I studied Medicine but am crazy about Music, let me be. It is simply what I love doing. I have seen Engineers becoming Facilitators for NGOs and they love the job and dont feel like practising their profession. cool

So lets not criticise all Engineers (those not practising it) working in the banks, some may just love the job they are doing.

Great day wink
