Latest ASUU strike update. Weeks after the Appeal court ruling ordered the Academic Staffs Union of Universities (ASUU) back to work, there seems to be more of an unsettled agreement as there are more confrontations from ASUU after claiming that their salaries were “amputated”.

Recall that a few days back, our reporter at TomicxBlog gathered from a student of the University of Ibadan who confidently told us that his lecturer walked out of the classroom after being paid #29,000 for October. Latest ASUU strike update.

However, the Federal Ministry of Labour has refuted the claim of ASUU, saying they were not paid half the salaries, rather they cannot pay for work not done.

According to Olajide Oshundun, Head of Press and Publicity, Federal Ministry of Labour in a statement that was released on Saturday “The widespread reports of half payment of salary is misleading, grossly inaccurate.

The statement explained that members of ASUU were paid pro rata because they cannot be said for undone work, stating that the Minister of Labour and Employment, Chris Ngige never ordered the payment of half salaries.

The statement read;

“Following the ruling of the Court of Appeal, which upheld the order of the National Industrial Court of Nigeria (NICN), asking ASUU to go back to work, the leadership of the union wrote to the Minister, informing him that they have suspended the strike. The Federal Ministry of Education wrote to him in a similar vein and our labour inspectors in various states also confirmed that they have resumed work.

“So, the Minister wrote to the Federal Ministry of Finance, Budget and Planning, directing that their salaries should be restored. They were paid in pro rata to the number of days that they worked in October, counting from the day that they suspended their industrial action. Pro-rata was done because you cannot pay them for work not done. Everybody’s hands are tied.”
