Why staff that are not technically gifted sometimes rise faster than the technically gifted ones.

In some workplaces, a few staff that do not appear to be as good can sometimes rise to the top leaving behind colleagues with the technical chops.

While some nefarious behind-the-scenes activities may be responsible for this, trust that this is a tiny percentage of total cases.

You see, most of these guys have realised what they aren’t good at and doubled down on their strengths. They ensure that their “other” strengths are visible and valuable to a business.

They try these 10 things:

#1: Take on tasks that no one else wants to accomplish. They are resilient
#2: Speak up during important meetings. They contribute
#3: Create solutions to problems affecting their teams. They are resourceful
#4: Lead by example. They are empathetic
#5: Show up at notable events. They are visible
#6: Assist in recruiting efforts. They help with human capital
#7: Engage in business development efforts. They bring in business
#8: Participate in workplace events as a volunteer. They invest their time.
#9: Mentor/train/teach someone, a group, or the entire organisation. They are leaders
#10: Perform well on the job they were employed – Average can be good enough sometimes. They still work

Every job has technical and non-technical parts. Most of the technical details can be trained/taught. The non-technical aspects can be developed.

The idea is to combine both to be a model professional/business leader.

Do you have something to add?
