Undocumented, law-abiding immigrants won't get boot, President Obama says

The White House said Thursday it will let undocumented, law-abiding immigrants facing deportation stay in the U.S. and apply for work permits.

The policy shift focuses federal resources on booting out convicted criminals and others who pose a public safety or national security threat, while sparing undocumented students and other low-priority immigrant offenders.

Essentially, what is going to happen now is that illegal immigrants are going to get to stay in the United States if any of the following apply:

-arrival in the U.S. as a young child

-actively "pursuing an education"

-serving or served in the U.S. military

-spouse of someone in the U.S. military

-18 years old or younger

-"elderly"

-pregnant or nursing

-victim of a "serious crime"

-serious disability or health problem

-caring for a family member with a serious disability or health problem

Beside the change in policy regarding those facing deportation, Senate are also working on a law that will resolve the issue of the millions of out-of-status and illegal immigrants not facing deportation. And your age or anything else (like the criteria listed above) will not matter. So, everyone who arrived probably a year before the law passes will be able to at least get a working permit and green card - though citizenship may take longer than normal.
