Electrical devices must be able to withstand overvoltage’s while being in use. So, with appropriate testing, certain procedures must be followed.

HV Testing or most commonly known as “High Voltage Testing” is an electrical equipment that covers a range of techniques that depends on what is needed and what type of test is required. The device is typically put through high voltage testing to see whether it can operate safely under the specified electrical conditions and to evaluate the effectiveness of its insulation. The kind, level, and acceptable current flow of the voltage applied will be determined by the achieved goal during the high voltage testing. Insulation resistance tests are used when the high voltage testing target is deciding the insulation's value.

Testing of insulating materials and high voltage testing are two main categories of high voltage testing. When not carefully looked through a breakdown voltage, it may cause serious damage in the testing. It could also lead to dielectric fails and permits a large amount of current to flow.

The term "Dielectric Withstand Test" refers to a non-destructive high voltage test that determines whether the leakage current is below a prescribed safety limit for a certain voltage value. This test also confirms the equipment's insulation condition. All this high voltage testing is frequently referred to as hipot (high potential) testing, but related testers change significantly according to the test purpose and whether they are on factory or on site.

Electricity is a major factor in our day to day lives. It serves a purpose for us humans to live in an easier place. However, too much of everything could also lead to disaster. And if the electricity voltage has too much power, it can cause major issues. It can be a potential problem if it is not looked through precisely.

One essential type of testing required to ensure substantial, effective insulation in a wide range of industrial processes is high voltage testing. In order to assess the safety and quality of the cable and reduce the risk of electrical shocks and accidents, the insulation must be inspected. High voltage testing determines whether the system can sustain the voltage rating that you supply and guarantees that safety is up to design and standards.

Using HV testing, it is important to do the necessary maintenance on cables and high-voltage equipment. Utilizing maintenance checks allows the user to identify possible issues before they occur and fix them before they become out of control. It is also used to test new systems to make sure they can handle the required voltage.

Transformers typically face high voltage testing to verify functionality. To achieve the needed standards, quality, and dependability, the manufacturer conducts the primary high voltage testing as part of the routine tests in the production. Some of these are partial discharge measurements, switching impulse testing, lightning and switching resistance tests, and insulation resistance tests. While the on-field testers for maintenance purposes are considerably lower range, hv transformer testing uses generators of up to 100 KV range and higher to evaluate the insulation.

At the site, higher voltage testing is done during installation tests or routine maintenance. One of the most common is the withstand voltage test, which is used to determine whether the transformer's dielectric strength is enough for service or as part of maintenance programs to show that the equipment continues to be able to tolerate overvoltage’s while in use. If the measured current is less than the maximum leakage current permitted and does not cause the insulation to break, the high voltage testing was successful, and the product will be safe to use under typical operating conditions.
