Prof Chukwuma Charles Soludo ably represented by the Deputy Governor, Dr Onyekachukwu Ibezim said he was sent by Governor Soludo to physically assess the extent of damage done and plan on how to prevent future occurrence of fire outbreak.

Sympathizing with traders who lost their shops and goods to the fire inferno that occured at Kano Street, Main Market Onitsha, Soludo while thanking God for no loss of lives, have called for a meeting with market leaders to seek for permanent solution going forward.

He lamented that it's so unfortunate that every year, there's a frequent occurrence of fire disaster in the state especially when it's getting closer to the festive period.

Maintaing that such disaster must not repeat again in the state especially this period, he pointed out his belief on structure.

Governor Soludo complained about illegal structures being built in the market and lack of emergency exit for the purpose of natural disaster such as this.

He noted his concern about security of lives of traders and summoned a meeting with market leaders, stressing on enacting policies that would help prevent future fire outbreak.

"If it means every trader at Main Market to have fire extinguishers in their shops, we will put it as a law and force compliance. An immediate emergency training must be conducted", Soludo said.

"How many traders have insurance? I have always asked this question. Insurance helps to cushion effect of this nature.

"These are the kind of structure we want to lay and we will get there.

"We will expose you to all these insights because this is what the Government have come to do," Soludo stated.

Reacting, a Market Chairman observed that the State fire service at Main Market is not functional and pleaded with the State Government to come to their aid because victims have lost their means of livelihood.

The Commissioner for Power and Water Resources, Engr. Julius Chukwuemeka, Commissioner for Special Duties, Barr. Sly Ezeokenwa amongst others joined the Governor in the inspection tour.

Mark of good govts is to effect changes after disasters to prevent reoccurrence so these are good words.. a fire extinguisher on every row or every five shops or every shop plus in the security house would greatly prevent such disasters
