A federal high court in Abuja has sentenced Usman Baba, the inspector-general of police (IGP), to three months in prison for disobeying a court order.

The court, in a ruling that was delivered by Justice M. O. Olajuwon, on Tuesday, November 29, held that the IGP should be detained in custody for a period of three months, until he obeys an order it made on October 21, 2011, according to The Vanguard.

“If at the end of the three months, the IGP still refuses to purge his contempt, he shall be given another jail term,” Justice Olajuwon said.

The ruling came on the heels of a suit that was filed by a police officer, Patrick Okoli, who was unlawfully and compulsorily retired from the Nigerian Police Force (NPF).

Justice Olajuwon noted that though the Police Service Commission (PSC), recommended Okoli’s reinstatement into the police, a decision that was affirmed by the court, the IGP refused to comply with the order.

The court also ordered the payment of N10 million to the applicant, as damages for the unlawful, illegal and unconstitutional denial of his rights and privileges as a senior officer of the NPF from 1993 till date.

Our judiciary is powerful after all.

I foresee a time in this country when no one will transgress the laws of the land and go unpunished. Ever!

To Usman Baba, nothing dey happen!. It is impossible for him (an IGP) to be docked/remanded in prison custody. Lol. Na the day he will want to delve into politics or get international appointment, he will know that he has become an ex-convict. It is to his best interest and wise of him that he purges himself of all malfeasance and obey court order.
