The endemic corruption rocking Nigeria is also taking its toll on the judiciary on a very large scale in recent days.

Details from a reliable source have just emerged that a male judge in the Ikeja High Court, Lagos State, has been put on a watchlist following several petitions of bribery against him.

The petition details show how this particular judge has been indulging in the habit of collecting bribes from different parties. The petitions’ details also reveal that the judge collects money in foreign currencies to deliver judgment in favor of people who give bribes.

It was also gathered that over the years, multiple complaints have been made to the appropriate authorities against the habitual corrupt practices of this judge, but the results have been to no avail.

According to a reliable source, recently the situation got worse as he was found to have collected money from the two opposing sides of a case and ended up giving the judgment to the higher bidder. We learned that the party which the judgment did not favor has petitioned security agencies to investigate the complaints. The embattled judge, sensing that security agents are trailing him, is now begging the angry party not to proceed further. It was learned that he promised to remedy the situation by making sure that he would not release the CTC of the judgment he delivered.

However, the security agents are bent on getting to the root of the matter, and in no time, far from now, they would burst into his office and prosecute him to serve as a deterrent to others.

In recent days, there have been a lot of accusations of corruption in the judiciary. Stakeholders are very worried about this ugly development because it portends great danger for Nigeria.

A survey carried out by the Anti-Corruption Academy of Nigeria, the intellectual arm of the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC), claimed that about N9.45 billion was offered and paid as bribes by lawyers to judges between 2018 and 2020.

The report added that the judiciary was at the top of the Nigeria Corruption Index during the period of the survey carried out by the anti-graft agency.
