Austin Jay-Jay Okocha still holds the record for the most successful dribbles in a FIFA World Cup, despite setting the record 28 years ago.

Okocha was a standout player for Nigeria at the 1994 FIFA World Cup, and the little magician was virtually unplayable in the round-of-16 match against Italy.

The Super Eagles were eventually defeated by the Azzurri, who scored two late goals to cancel out Emmanuel Amuneke’s 26th-minute opener.

No other player has recorded more dribbles than Okocha since the World Cup’s inception in 1966, with only Jamal Musiala of Germany coming close at the 2022 edition with 13.

Okocha surpasses Paul Gascoigne’s record

Meanwhile, prior to Okocha breaking the record for most dribbles in a FIFA World Cup, England’s Paul Gascoigne and Brazil’s Jairzinho shared the honor, according to All Nigeria Soccer.

Both players had thirteen successful dribbles at the 1990 World Cup in Italy and the 1970 World Cup in Mexico.

In a World Cup game, Italy’s Sandro Mazzola, Germany’s Reinhard Libuda, Barcelona legends Johan Cruyff and Diego Maradona, and Portugal’s Eusébio all had twelve dribbles.

Okocha scores greatest Bundesliga goal

According to Sports Brief, legendary Nigeria midfielder Okocha is still one of the most popular African footballers in Bundeslinga history.

The 48-year-old wowed fans in Germany’s top flight and around the world with his incredible skills, trickery, and flair.

Fans of Eintracht Frankfurt, where he played for the reigning Europa League champions between 1992 and 1996, remember the former Paris Saint-Germain star fondly.
