After several months of political consultations, the Northern Elders Consultative Forum, including the Christian leaders in the All Progressives Congress in the North, on Friday formally pledged its support for the presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, Atiku Abubakar, for the 2023 election.

It explained that Atiku was adopted as its candidate following the resolution of the northern Christian leaders to work with their Muslim counterparts to adopt one of the presidential candidates in a bid to defeat the same-faith presidential ticket of the APC.

A former Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Babachir Lawal, who had been a member of the group, had endorsed the presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Peter Obi, and his running mate, Datti Baba-Ahmed.

Lawal had said Obi was endorsed after painstakingly reviewing and analysing the alternative candidates.

But a former Speaker of the House of Representatives, Yakubu Dogara, and other members of the group distanced themselves from the endorsement, saying they had yet to conclude consultations and that their position would be made public.

However, making their position known at an event in Abuja on Friday, a former Deputy Governor of Kogi State, Simon Achuba, while reading the report of the technical criteria committee set up by the leaders, said Atiku was adopted after due consideration of the report of the technical criteria committee set up by the leaders.

The report was unanimously adopted.

Apart from Dogara and Achuba, other northern leaders at the meeting were a former governor of Kogi State, Idris Wada; and a former Minister for Water Resources, Mukhtar Shagari.

The report was signed by its Chairman and former Minority Leader in the House of Representatives, Mohammed Kumaila, and a legal practitioner, Nunge Mele (SAN).

Achuba said the candidates evaluated were Atiku, the presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress, Bola Tinubu; and the presidential candidate of the New Nigeria Peoples Party, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso.

He said the leaders considered the existing structure of the PDP, the capacity of the candidates, evidence of national penetration, and religious and ethnic balance, among others to arrive at a decision.

Achuba said while Obi and Kwankwaso might emerge as strong contenders in the political arena in the future, from all indications, the PDP appeared to be the best option to adopt and support.

He said, “The seven and a half years of the APC government has engendered widespread national perception of its inability to tackle security challenges and turn around the national economy.

“A further compounding albatross on its neck is the unfortunate self-inflicted divisive same-faith ticket which cannot guarantee the desired peace, unity and cohesion in Nigeria, a decision that has been kicked against by a huge population of Nigerians.

“The perception that the APC presidential candidate has some health challenges makes people very uncomfortable. There is the fear that it may precipitate a situation where unelected surrogates will be running the government while the president is left attending to his health

Earlier, Dogara said he would not have backed a Christian-Christian ticket if it was the case, adding that all Nigerians must be given a sense of belonging.

He added, “This is a difficult moment for Nigeria. I know that some of us may not even find it easy by the time we have taken this decision. But if you are a student of history, you will know what division has done.

I can understand Dogara's sentiment, his political relevance came at the behest of Saraki's maradona skills to displace Gbajabiamila (Thiefnibu's puppet) and install him. Hence, he will always go where his benefactor goes if he wants to stay relevant.

However, Dogara stands to benefit more from any political alignment than any party.

Dogara cannot win any polling unit in Bogoto or Dass...Obi will even get more votes in Bauchi than 50 Dogaras.

Surely President Obi will be returned elected.

Lol. Northerners are a funny bunch. Nowhere is politics played like this in the world. You formally leave your Party to work against it in civilised climes.

Or you work silently in the background. You never declare open anti-Party engagement as Dogara, Babachir Lawal etal are doing.

Just confirms what everyone knows about the North but cannot put in perspective to guide their decision-making.

I.e the North is not interested in elevating Party democracy and development. They only want power for the sake of it and to use controlling Nigeria's wealth, resources and direction.

Whichever way the election goes Nigerians, if they are smart and visionary, will insist on more autonomy for States and regions so we can be free of regressive partners we did not choose but events beyond our powers lumbered us with.

Power lies in the hands of the people. All these ethnic groups are speaking from both mouths. Nigerian voters know their choice based on common sense and the need to ensure diversity, equity in our polity

It's not even going to be close. It'll be a landslide win!

OBIDATTI 2023!

Northern minority tribes should understand the danger of voting a Fulani to succeed another Fulani who will consolidate on Buharis nepotism despite the Taqqiya they are now spreading after 7 years of absolute silence, it's like the herdsmen taking over our communities and killing people never do yet, Stockholm Syndrome.

The Igbos are only good at rescuing the family of murdered student Deborah and being vocal about the killings in the north central zone but they don't deserve our votes, elections have arrived and it's time for fake Arewa unity undecided
