Food is the substance that living things ingest in order to survive and maintain health. It is made up of carbohydrates, proteins, and fats. Food is used for energy and nourishment and can be plant or animal based. Humans are omnivores and feed on a variety of sources. After the Ice Age, humans transitioned from gathering to hunting and agriculture was born. Since then, humans have become much more accustomed to growing food and using it for fuel.

Some consumers may be concerned about the presence of chemicals in their food. Fortunately, most of these ingredients are safe and are regulated by federal authorities. When purchasing food, always check the label for the country of origin. Food is an essential part of human societies. It has served as a carrier of culture and has contributed to globalization. In the early days of European colonial expansion, sweet potatoes and corn were introduced to Asia and Africa.
