"Cargo cult" means roughly that someone has tried to copy something he has seen, but really does not understand the underlying principle of. And thus, when he makes the copy it wouldn't really work.


Historical origins:

During the WW2, US troops encountered primitive tribes living in pacific islands. These tribals were amazed by the technology and especially "Cargo" - the support material and foodstuffs that the US military had. Cargo came in with flying machines (planes) and seemingly in endless quantities. As US troops left the islands, the locals tried to make a religion out of what they had seen. They copied the airfields and made planes, radio masts and barracks out of wood, hoping they could call "The Cargo" from the heavens once more.
