Job Description

The primary objectives of the DFID Malaria Project are to assist the Government of Nigeria, and specifically its National Malaria Control Program, to:

- improve national, state, and LGA capacity for policy development, planning, coordination
- harmonize all agencies’ support for malaria sector at federal, state, and local levels
- improve population coverage of effective measures for malaria prevention
- improve access of population to effective treatment for malaria
- increase community awareness and demand for effective malaria treatment and prevention
- conduct operational research into key areas of prevention and treatment provides evidence for more effective strategies

Position Summary:

The Commercial Sector Manager will work under the Project Director to plan and implement a strategy that will effectively engage the commercial sectors in the prevention and treatment components of the project’s activities. S/he will take the lead in identifying Nigerian and international companies that can significantly help the project reach its stated goals through the provision of products and/or services that will aid in malaria prevention and treatment.

Responsibilities

- Provide management and technical leadership for the involvement of the manufacturing and distribution sector for malaria prevention and treatment in project activities
- Foster collaboration between staff in the public and commercial sectors, helping them to form project partnerships with mutual benefits.
- Identify those companies and products best suited to achieve project goals on malaria prevention and treatment; and develop partnership agreements that specify the inputs and outputs required from the project and the commercial partners.
- Provide strategic direction and oversight for the development of business, marketing, and communications plans for the project and its commercial partners
- Foster collaboration with other donors, NGOs, companies and agencies working towards similar objectives in the field of malaria prevention and treatment through regular dialogue and the pursuit of complementary investments.
- Lead the identification, design and pilot implementation of relevant voucher schemes for malaria prevention in the selected States
- Liaise with the Subsidy Advisor and share experiences of vouchers schemes for malaria prevention and treatment
- Provide general oversight of the LLIN technology transfer component including cooperation with the USAID NetMark Project to increase the number of Nigerian companies producing LLINs.
- Oversee the work of the Technology Transfer Specialist.
- Assist project staff in developing performance monitoring procedures and indicators
- Ensure quality of all project activities designed to meet project objectives
- Coordinate the project’s commercial activities with those of other donor programs to ensure maximum impact
- Serve as point person for AED’s contributions to the project.

Education:

- B.A. in business or MBA preferred.

Experience:

- Minimum five years of practical experience in working in the private sector in management, marketing, communications, business planning or sales, preferably in support of health products
- Minimum of 3 years working with companies in developing nations
- Advanced knowledge and technical expertise implementing private health sector programs
- Significant experience in marketing and product or services development, preferably in a management capacity
- Knowledge of subsidy schemes and mechanisms, including vouchers, desirable

Skills:

- Ability to work independently, determine priorities, and manage a variety of activities while collaborating with a broad coalition of health partners
- Must have excellent written, verbal and computer software skills
- Ability to follow through on a large number of activities and work well under pressure to meet deadlines
- Excellent leadership and management skills
- Excellent organizational and problem-solving skills
- Demonstrated ability to facilitate complex relationships between organizations and individuals, and to interact smoothly and effectively with clients, colleagues, and the public, with an emphasis on client service
- Strong consultation skills (i.e., diagnostic, assessment, technical assistance) essential
- Established position and reputation among peer groups, competitors, and colleagues
- Understanding and knowledge of current trends in public-private partnerships, marketing, and corporate social responsibility
