The 2023 Miss America pageant, set for Thursday, Dec. 15 at Mohegan Sun Casino & Resort in Uncasville, Connecticut, is a livestream-only affair — unless you’re attending in person (tickets cost $150 and up on Ticketmaster).

Gone are the days when the competition would air on network TV.

Emma Broyles, the former Miss Alaska, made history last December when she was crowned Miss America 2022 as the pageant marked its 100th anniversary. Anchorage’s Broyles, now 21, became the first titleholder from Alaska (you can see the crowning moment in the video below).

In 2021, the first year the pageant was streaming-only (it formerly aired on NBC and other networks, including cable), the show was still free to watch via NBCUniversal’s Peacock streaming service. To stream, you just had to to sign up.

This year, those wishing to watch Miss America at home have to sign up at PageantsLive.com.

The price?

The Miss America Organization, which is based in Sewell, says this fee provides access to streaming via the web and the Pageants Live app, available through Roku, Samsung TVs and Apple TV.

But no other option is given for a one-time watch of the 2023 Miss America pageant, meaning people have to sign up, pay and cancel after the pageant is over. If they forget, they will eventually be charged for a second month. (What, you don’t want a whole year of access to a pageant video library?)

The 2020 pageant, held in 2019 and broadcast on NBC, was the last to air on traditional TV.

Miss America’s absence reflects flagging ratings and its long-fading relevance, despite efforts to modernize the competition. The 2020 event drew approximately 3.6 million viewers. In 2015, the pageant, then broadcast on ABC, claimed 7 million viewers.dsf
