The 2022 FIFA World Cup ended with an exciting conclusion on December 18 when Argentina defeated France on spot-kick penalties, Newspremises understands.

Argentina players continue their fervent celebrations while France players have since sent out apologies letters to their supporters.

Since league play is expected to resume the following week, both teams have returned home as the players get ready to head back to their respective clubs.

But to some supporters it's not yet over. An online petition has now emerged from France, demanding that the World Cup final be replayed, and is quickly gathering pace with close to 200,000 fans having signed the petition so far at the time of writing.

What they are putting before FIFA to re-run the match is the mistakes in the match. It alleges that Kylian Mbappe was fouled before Angel Di Maria’s second goal for Argentina and therefore called for the match to be replayed.

The petition, which has been launched on the platform MesOpinions, is receiving huge support from France fans, according to the Mirror.

Referee was at fault

According to the website, the first two goals scored by Argentina should not have stood. Szymon Marciniak, a Polish referee, received a harsh critique from the well-known French journal L'Equipe.

The newspaper criticized the referee for giving an easy penalty to Angel Di Maria after he was knocked down by Ousmane Dembele's charge. Marcus Thuram was later disallowed from receiving a penalty for essentially the same infraction.

Despite Kylian Mbappe's heroics, Argentina ultimately won the game on extra time penalties. Such petitions haven't yet had a big effect on football. In the past, Chelsea supporters have started a petition to stop Anthony Taylor from officiating their games after a contentious London derby matchup with Tottenham Hotspur.
