Books should be written about this. Here we see a government push millions of it's citizens and waste billions of Naira in policies that don't work.
In 8 years, the price of a bag of rice went from N7,000 to the mid 50 thousands. That's an 8x increase in the price of a staple food.
On the other hand, there has been no increase in wages.
How did this happen?
Under the GEJ administration, we discovered that we were spending about 1 billion naira a day on the importation of rice. We felt this was a scandal. Rice could grow in Nigeria just as it does in China.
So we started the push. Both federal and state governments began to invest to becoming 100% rice sufficient.
Like every other problem, we poured billions into it.
Thousands of acres were converted into rice farms.
Then Buhari came in and took the project to the next level.
At one point, the government boasted that we are 100% rice independent.
We were told that the government of Thialand came begging, they no longer had a market for their rice.
But the truth was that smuggling was thriving. The government and people of Nigeria were losing out.
The cost of rice continued to increase.
Our government increased the import duties and sealed the land boarders and the cost went up.
As the cost of rice went up, it took other food prices with it.
Nigerian became poorer and less productive.
Today, almost every state has one form of rice processing or production yet, the rice is not affordable.
The Lessons
1. Government is and should not be involved in production.
2. There is always a price to pay for every economic decision.
3. Research, knowledge, and understanding how things work is key to business.
Let me explain. In south east Asia, farmers yield an average of 8 to 10 tons per hectre of rice but here on Nigeria it's only 2 tons.
If we have spent same among, land, and labour on growing cassava and plantain we would have had more yield, reduced the demand on rice and reduced it's price.
We probably would be exporting cassava and that would have balanced out the importation of rice.
So after billions of Naira spent, our people can no longer afford the traditional Christmas rice.
To all of you who can, I wish you a merry Christmas and to those who can't, e go better.

Buhari/APC government has only succeeded in impoverishing Nigerians the more. A salary earner who was earning N60k in 2015 and was buying a bag of rice for N7k is still earning N60k today but would have to buy the same bag of rice for N55k. Is he made richer or poorer bybthis goverment?

Don't forget, people get promotion at work with no salary increment. A typical example is civil service.

The simplest of economics those who advise Buhari on economics do not know what is comparative cost advantage. Japan wouldn't give up electronics because they want to produce food. Someone who has a plot of land in lekki wouldn't use it to farm because he wants to produce foods. They will optimize their advantages and use their proceed to buy what they can not produce.
Our kind of economics here is just like spending over 5 billion dollar in Gombe to discover fathom oil worth 2 billion dollars.

The op you forgot to add that buhari wanted to destroy Igbo rice business men by handling rice business to his Fulani people, he made sure he massively funded rice faming in the North, he closed all the southern borders to frustrate Igbos from importing rice and allowed all the northern borders open for his brothers to do international business, being greedy as usual like dangote the northern farmers began to horde rice and increased the price till today, immediately buhari came into power he began to chase Igbo people , in his bad and killer instinct mindset to destroy anything Igbo, he went after all the businesses Igbo control , he went to foreign countries to de-market Igbos hoping that those countries will start to be hostile on them and start to deport them, if you can remember the famous Nigerians are criminals ,Nigerians youth's are lazy that is why the come to here by buhari, buhari increased all tariff and tax in all Igbo controlled business not knowing that it will affect the Nigerian economy, his hatred on Igbo never allowed him to see the danger , he ignored all waning , all his target was to destroy Igbo and those in foreign countries who he accused as those who send dollars to finance development in the south, later he brought army and insecurity to Igbo land to create criss situation, hoping to create war zone in southeast

I don't know why other Nigerians are allowing yoruba and fulani to destroy the country. Using unfair government policy to subdue igbos always lead to economic disaster. You can't use government to suppress people whose strength lies in individualism

. What will they do, when there is a gang up and hatred by all of them , even the Niger Delta can not talk when their sea ways who is directly the route to gulf of Guinea and the natural deep sea is not being routed and charted in international maritime route because 75% of Igbo importers will use it for Port Harcourt, aba, calabar , Onitsha and nnewi route instead of the Lagos wharf
