I often hear people say that when you receive calls with your mobile phone at a filling/Petrol station or use your phone for illumination or receive calls when filling the tank of your generator it could get ignited and kill someone. My own understanding and from basic engineering theory I do not see how this could happen but this has always been the belief. Can anyone share their experience about this or put up a proof that this could or could not happen.

No it can't. But will you please take a 10 minute time out to fill up your gas tank, peek under the hood, kick your tires, etc.
