Picture: Governor Samuel Ogbemudia of the Mid-West State and Pele in 1969. You can see Chief Gabriel Igbinedion in the background.

Former Super Falcons and Golden Eaglets coach, Godwin Izilien, played for the Mid-West 11 in this match. He told Brilla FM (this morning) that he was invited to be part of the Mid-West 11 and his chairman, Gabriel Igbinedion, was informed. He said that at half time, when they were losing 0-2, they decided that they must do something to stop the "shit". They noticed that Pele was the hub of the Santos team (all the passes went through him), so they decided that they had to detail someone to mark Pele. The problem was, who would do it? Someone suggested that the captain should do it, but he (Izilien) volunteered to do it. He said that he wasn't able to stop Pele, but he was able to reduce the frequency of Pele's passes and the Mid-West team were able to motivate themselves to score a goal.

The way you people lie eh. How is that Gabriel Igbinedion? You must be an APC member

civil war was sad, but didn't change the fact that the Nigerian pounds and US dollar was in a tight race back then.

Pelé states that his most beautiful goal was scored at Rua Javari stadium on a Campeonato Paulista match against São Paulo rival Juventus on 2 August 1959. As there is no video footage of this match, Pelé asked that a computer animation be made of this specific goal.

civil war was sad, but didn't change the fact that a naira and dollar was in a tight race.

1.There was no naira then, it was the Nigerian pound.

2.Just because one pound nigerian equaled one pound British did not mean that Nigeria was 'a better country'. Large swathes of the nation at the time had no light, good access to roads, even access to health. Trains worked, but one train journey could take days as the things moved slowly. The further one was away from the city, the lower the chances of getting anything like amenities.

Only in the big cities could one enjoy a modicum of modern living...if you had the money and the cash. If not...

And corruption dey well well. One of the reasons that the 1966 coup happened was because corruption.

(In the 1960's one of my relatives on my father's side died because the nearest hospital at the time was over 4-5 hours away...if not days away. Nowadays, there are several hopsitals within reach of the same village...including tertiary...within one hour's drive self. All built since the 1980's)

3. Naira was strong because our import bill was not much. Most Nigerians did not live with modern anemities. And back then we were not importing stuff like

1) Phones...phone was a luxury then...plus a phone was only used for making and recieving calls.
2.Computers...a computer was a big machine that took up one big room. Only seen in some universites, and companies.
3.Televisions ...fewer people had TV sets
4.Cars...until the 1970's car ownership was not for the masses.
5. Gas cookers, etc, etc.

It was when the number of educated people started increasing...which meant we had a growing middle class in the 1970's...that our import bill balloned...forex left Nigeria...and the naira (introduced in 1973) began to fall...(one of several reasons).

...and someone would be calling Messi or Ronaldo GOAT? Pele is the real goat. I wish people could go get all the compilations of his matches and watch for weeks. You don't have to be in the past to live in the past. You can still feel relevant by reading books and watching movies linked to events of the past.

Governor Mobolaji Johnson of Lagos was very tall, but he isn't the person in that picture. That is Governor Samuel Ogbemudia of the Mid-West (Bendel) State. The moderator took the picture from the second post and attached it to the first post.

Thanks for the clarification. Enjoy your quality threads. More grease..

Wow, just surprised to learn that Great Pele played in Ogbe Stadium in its heyday. That stadium has really come a long way and hosted the greatest footballer ever.

Pele's 1978 tour was sponsored by a company

The company was called Tama and I believed they made electronics gadgets.

The adverts were headlined "Tama and Pele".

They played against clubsides and an "NFA XI", I guess they were not allowed to play against The Green Eagles.

Cairo,Sunday, February 18th, 1973

Santos (Brazil) 5-0 Al-Ahly (Egypt)

Pele scores twice.

Reuters Text:

“In Cairo, eighty-thousand football fans packed a stadium to see the legendary skills of Pele and his Santos teammates.

National Club of Egypt, wearing the dark shirts, kicked off in the match against their illustrious visitors at the weekend.

Santos were swiftly on the attack and Pele, wearing the number ten shirt, was looking to increase his world record tally of goals. Here he tested the Egyptian goalkeeper with a header.

The second half -- and the Egyptians mounted a counter attack. Their defence had stood firm and the first half had been goalless.
Edu put Santos ahead from a free kick a few minutes into the second half.
Then Pele split the defence to score a characteristic goal -- the eleven-hundred and sixty-first of his career. He was later to add a second. At the other end, although the Egyptians created several clear chances, they were unable to score.

Santos went on to add two more goals to complete a convincing five-nil victory over their Egyptian opponents.”

Note: “Al Ahly” means “National” in Arabic.
