The Minister of Health, Osagie Ehanire, has said that to address the brain drain in the sector, the federal government is setting up a mechanism to engage Nigerian doctors and nurses in the diaspora and connect them with universities and hospitals in the country.

Speaking in Abuja on Tuesday at the 17th edition of the President Muhammadu Buhari (PMB) Administration” Scorecard Series (2015-2023), he lamented that experienced doctors were leaving the country.

Ehanire said a lot of doctors and nurses in Nigeria felt they were not properly rewarded for the work they were doing.

The minister said the federal government was trying to address the issue by improving the conditions of service for medical personnel.

He, however, noted that there was high mobility of health workers globally and that Nigeria should not be seen as the only country affected.

He said, “I was at a meeting where the minister of health of Gambia was complaining too that the doctors they have, some of them have left. I also spoke with authoritative in the UK who also complained that their doctors are going to Canada and New Zealand where their pay is better.

“So they require lots of people because there is a high need in those countries. So mobility is global and not that we are doing something wrong but market forces working globally. The situation is the same in Turkey and Egypt.

“So, we are trying to measure performance and let people be happy they are properly rewarded for what they have done.”

“What we are also doing is to do what they call the conversion of brain drain to brain gain. We are doing that with a new mechanism that is being set up now to engage Nigerian doctors and nurses in the diaspora and connect them with universities and hospitals because modern technology makes it possible for somebody to be delivering lectures in New York and we have people here listening to it. So we can have those who are ready to transfer knowledge to do so.

“Also, those who have to do surgery or see a patient can book periods during which they will come. So, they can be affiliated with a particular teaching hospital and come in with cutting-edge knowledge and skills to come here and pass this knowledge on.”

Speaking further, the minister said the government was still vigilant and that there was a high level of preparedness at Nigeria’s entry points to prevent a fresh outbreak of COVID-19.

He said, “The observed increase in the number of cases in China, USA and Europe is seasonal and it is not unexpected during the winter.

“So, the recent relaxation also affects the rising in cases with the removal of travel restrictions.”

And when the issue of doctors moving abroad was raised to the useless Minister of Labour Ngige, he claimed Nigeria has enough doctors that's why doctors are moving abroad.

Why don't you hold down the ones still at home first, so those outside can see your sincerity...

Do these APC people think, when people sell all their properties and leave do you think it's a sudden thought?, those guys won't comeback unless you fix things...

SmartyPants:

When you read headlines and respond without reading the content, these are the sort of off-point contributions you make.

Oh smartypants educate me pwess embarassed
Aren't you the one off point, they are focusing on those who have already left and have probably been engaged by foriegn establishments, the fact is if our doctors weren't good enough just the way they are those countries won't accept them, so all these conversion of drain to gain is BS, we make competent doctors already, paying those guys that left, just to teach Those that stayed is waste.

Focus on those who stayed!!!

All the bastards in this useless APC government have allowed everything including the healthcare sector to go bad especially the immigration of capable hands abroad.

Prof Isaac Adewole said "not all doctors can become specialists - my tailor is a medical doctor." Chris Ngige- "Nigeria have enough doctors. So whosoever wants to immigrate can immigrate" and this Ehinare stupidly said "I don't know that doctors are being paid #5000 hazard allowance."

Now they want to hire or woo back the talents that have allowed to slip out of this nation after their clueless years of mismanaging this nation.

They would never come back.....until you share our commonwealth with equity

They are not fools.....Medical expertise is an open market in the world.

But you subject Highly trained medical doctors to penury

Its not their wish to abscond.....But the difference between the madman and the sane person is only self preservation

Buhari goes to london after ruling the country 2 Times,
Yaradua died abroad after a lot of neglect treating his end stage kidney disease, failed transplant
Abacha died of cardiac arrest, which should have been well managed with the right emergency services
Abiola died of a cardiac arrest
Abdusalami too is a Germany medical tourist
Babangida just left for Germany after ruling the country for 8years, Recovering from stroke and Hemiplegia
Tinubu is also a London medical tourist, with parkinson and possibly early onset dementia
Atiku is also a London/Dubai medical tourist.

Countless politicians are medical tourist. Even if they are stupid enough to come back.....They are coming back as politicians.

I am not here to shame any of the above people, but a standard world class hospital in Lagos and Abuja should be a BiPartisan project, because APC or PDP or LP.....Health is paramount.

Shameless Politicians

Nothing but another means to siphon large sums..

You mean you're calling same doctors you couldn't maintain when their value was low while in Nigeria? What a huge dry joke!!

By the time Buhari and his cohorts are done with Nigeria, we would wished for Sani Abacha!..

Whether they are just noticing, paying a fair amount should at least slow down the rush, but that is just by the way.

The doctors yet know that by remaining in this country, they can be the next Barrister Omobolanle or Dr Chinelo.

You need to build a safe and working country. These are the things attractive about those places that hire our healthcare providers.

That's a much better approach than trying to blackmail doctors and other professionals into staying and being highly underpaid...

Politicians think they can keep looting money, inflating contracts etc, but professionals who are working in the country are being impoverished, that can never continue. If you don't appreciate them, other countries will.

Next, it's teachers turn to japa... Una go learn by force.

We need to immediately ban health workers from leaving the country as a matter of urgency. Their unpatriotic behaviour will no longer be tolerated.

There should bw a law that will ban doctors anɗ Nurses who attended State and FG universities from traveling out if they have no work for 12 years in Nigeria.

You study medicine in Nigeria, pay cheap school fees cause it has been subsidise by the Govt and then leave Nigeria Govt job for a better pay abroad.

If you are not comfortable with the law, go study medicine for abroad

Very useless govt, this is clearly another way to siphon money, why get foreigners to do the job our doctors are already professionals for, why not increase the salary of our medical staffs and fly them abroad for courses and seminars if the need arise. Na so we go begin hear billions and trillions for this project.

Mad govt. I listened to the radio this morning. Two lamentations.
1. From impending resident doctors strike
2. From a state that has bad road and the gov is giving lamba left right and centre. At times, he ll claim na FG get the road.
The country ll rotate to a point where nothing works again and we all explode into anything, war, crisis etc.
