AHLUS-SUNNAH WAL JAMAA'AH OR AS-SALAFIYYAH

Questioner: What is the difference between “Ahlus-Sunnah Wal Jamaa'ah” and “As-Salafiyyoon”?

Dr Sharof: There is no difference between them. Ahlus-Sunnah are the “As-Salafiyyah”, “al-Ghurabaa”, “al-Firqatun-Naajiyah”, “Ahlul-Hadeethi Wal Athaar” etc. Having numerous names does not multiply a particular thing. These terminologies are just specified in reference to their intended meanings.

If your view is that there is a difference between Ahlus-Sunnah and Salafiyyah, then you are disturbed by ignorance; you don't understand Islaam...why would you make a distinction (between the two terminologies) in seclusion and publicize it before the world? Some individuals would say the Ahlus-Sunnah are the not too rigid people while the extremely rigid ones are the “As-Salafiyyah”. It is certain that the enemies of the Ahlus-Sunnah are those who say this; no Ahlus-Sunnah will say that. Ahlus-Sunnah are the “As-Salafiyyoon”. I hope we understand.

As-Salafiyyoon refers to those following the way of the pious predecessors from the Sahaabah, Taabi'oon and their successors upon goodness until the Day of reckoning.

If you call yourself a Salafi and do not approve of the term “Ahlus-Sunnah”, then you are unsophisticated and deluded. Ahlus-Sunnah is Salafiyyah and Salafiyyah is Ahlus-Sunnah.
