Former President Olusegun Obasanjo said no Nigerian leaders can create a new Nigeria overnight.

Obasanjo stated this in his address at The International Conference On ‘Deepening Democratic Culture and Institutions for Sustainable Development and Security in Nigeria’ in Port Harcourt on Thursday.

According to Obasanjo, ascension to political offices does not empower incumbents to destroy the policies and programmes of their predecessors.

The former president said while it does not matter the party a predecessor belonged to, new leaders should sustain the policies and projects of their predecessors in as much as the programmes are in the interest of the people.

Obasanjo said, “In Nigeria, each new government behaves as if Nigeria is a newly found country,” he said during his speech titled, ‘Respecting The Principles Of Democracy.

“In fact, during campaigns, some leaders sound as if they plan to reinvent Nigeria and create new Nigerians overnight. That is because they miss the aspect of democracy that emphasizes continuity, stability and predictability.

“One regime can lay the foundation but it requires many regimes to continue to build positively and constructively on the foundation.

“It is largely because we overlook and often disregard the basic principles of democracy. And somehow, we do not appreciate the damage that we do, individually and collectively, to the fabric of the nation,” he said.

Obasanjo stressed that democracy is not a one-day wonder, noting that there must be continuity and predictability of policies despite changes in leadership.

We've told them that not even an Obi can succeed with the present setup of Nigeria and the many demons holding it down and still parading about.

Let's be very cautious in our optimism so as not to get badly disappointed.

Buhari possesses more deft, grit, and 'I no send' attitude. The actual and perfect attitude anyone who wants to govern a country like Nigeria needs to possess, yet, we all are a witness to the many sabotages, whinings, and wailings.

This supposed country isn't anything to write home about what a country is supposed to be.

I am honestly and fervently praying for Obi to win this election. Only then will people begin to understand what I keep hammering on.

Serious countries have "DEVELOPMENT PLANS". This plan normally staged in 5 years or 10 years. It's like a blueprint generally accepted by all the political elite as the template to develop the state. Projects, infastructures, policies and targets are all enumerated in these plans with a good design to manage by objectives. Young undergraduats are vigorously trained and s skilled to specifics on how to handle these projects within these developmental goals in other to further the cause of national development. At the end of every "developmental plan", a new one is created.

When this kind of plan is in place, every new administration comes in knowing that there's an already well laid down plan in place to help them navigate through the process of governing, without acting as if their predecessors didn't achieve anything. Governments become a continuum as projects that overlapped into a new administration, are sustained to the finish line.

The Chinese follow this plan religiously. Unfortunately, the western world has taken out time to demonize things like this. They made it look like an act of the "communists". Many developing nations have jettisoned this idea because they don't want to be in the bad books of the powerful western lords. Obasanjo is one of them, yet he will moralize as if he's not part of the problem, when he is/was.
