The negligence of indigenous cultures, customs and traditions by Nigerian youths has been bemoaned by the Akire of Ikire-Ile kingdom, Alh. Abdulazeez Olatunbosun Adebanjo.

The Monarch, who was the guest speaker at the traditional lecture for the 2023 Batch A Stream 1 Orientation Course, made this known on Monday at the NYSC Permanent Orientation Camp multi-purpose Hall, Ede.

He stated that every Nigeria ethnic group has its peculiar beliefs, traditions and customs, adding that these ethnic groups are accommodating. He said: “Yoruba language, for instance, has its own religion and today you can see many Yorubas who are Muslims and Christians.

“Various aspects of our customs and traditions keep us together. Today, you can see these religions inherent in a family.”

The Monarch emphasised on the beauty of both material and immaterial aspect of the Nigeria cultures, ranging from parenting, leadership, marriage, and ethical values.

Citing the Yoruba culture as an example, he said “Marriage is not a one-man show. Family heads, friends, relatives and neighbours all have a role to play in marriage.

“Yoruba people believe in honesty, integrity, immunity and hardwork to maintain, sustain and protect one another from shame.

“Each family or clan head has their family head known as Baale, who instill discipline and ensure that everyone under him abide by the laws of the clan.

Nowadays, there are laws and they are not implemented, everyone takes law into their hands, that's why youths are being implored to be good ambassadors and proud of their indigenous traditions.

The lecture had in attendance the NYSC Osun State Coordinator, Mrs Olayinka Abdulwahab, Camp Director, Mrs Mary Adebesin, Heads of Assignments and heads of collaborating agencies.

The event featured dance performances by the Troupe of the Kabiyesi and presentation of gifts to the Monarch by the State Coordinator.
