What A Scam: Misconception About Babies Born With Iuds Unraveled by NnekaSandraUgbo(f): 10:59pm On Feb 05, 2023
Are babies born with IUDs in their hands? how true can that be, why would babies who can't even hold their placenta identify and latch onto an IUD that small until they were born?

Well let's see

On the 4th of February 2023, I listened to a broadcast on the radio while on transit about an Idaho woman Violet Quick in her 20s. She and her husband planned not to start having children at the moment until she was psychologically ready. She opted for an IUD to prevent conception however, she conceived and eventually gave birth to her son despite the IUD. The funny thing here is that she claimed the baby was holding the device in his hand at birth. This wasn't the first time such claims have surfaced. Sometime back in 2017, the same news trended on social media so I decided to find out the truth about these claims.

Now, what is IUD?
IUD also known as Intra-Uterine Device, is a contraceptive in form of a T-shaped plastic and copper device that is inserted in a woman's womb/uterus by a doctor or a nurse. It is also called 'Coil' or 'Copper coil'.

How does it work?
When the contraceptive is inserted in the womb, it releases copper into the womb to stop pregnancy from taking place and also protects against pregnancy for a period of 5 and 10 years. The copper released changes the cervical mucus texture thus making it difficult for sperms to swim up to the egg.

If this is 100% true that copper is secreted into the womb to prevent fertilization/ implantation, why do we have news of babies born even when the mothers are still on contraceptives holding the IUD in their hands or even in their mouth as some rumors would go?
Now, you as a woman risk the chances of getting pregnant even with the contraceptive on (IUD) if :
*The IUD shifts in the womb or is out of place totally
* your body rejects it
Here is what the Association for Women Health Care has to say 'the IUD does not block semen and sperms from passing into the vagina and uterus during ejaculation'.

To unravel this misconception about babies born with the IUD in their hands, I am going to be making references to three cases ;

Our number one is Lucy Hellein from Alabama
Lucy Hellein gave birth to her son Dexter on April 2017. In May 2017, her son's photo with an IUD in his hand started making rounds on social media. It got so many comments that VERIFY, a media company called on her to prove the authenticity of the claim.

Lucy told VERIFY that she had an IUD inserted in her but became pregnant afterward, the doctor tried to take it out but he couldn't. She has a C- section (cesarean section) where the contraceptive was taken out along with the baby. She said it was the nurse that placed the IUD in the boy's hand and gave him to her. They took a photo while laughing at the failed IUD.

On June 30, 2020, another claim of a baby clutching his mother's failed IUD in his hand was on TUKO, a platform describing itself as Kenya's leading news site. However, Dr. Trans Viet Phuong one of the heads of the Obstetrics department in the hospital where the baby was born told the Vietnamese Newspaper, VN International that the news about the baby was FALSE

He said when the boy was born, the IUD came out with him and the baby only grabbed at the coil afterward.

September 13, 2022, Lucy Tyler, another woman whose son was born in 2017 said her son was not born with the IUD in his hand rather it was the nurse that placed it on his hand, then her husband took a picture of them.

If you are still in doubt or want to believe that the babies were born holding the IUD then try to answer these questions
1. Why has no one who gave birth to a baby girl claimed that it was born holding an IUD? Why is it just the male children?
2. How is it possible that the child can locate and hold on to the device until the day of birth?
3. Why are the stories similar? Isn't this just a scam or misinterpretation of pictures posted online?

While you're on that, some experts have these to say
Dr. Leena Nathan, an Obstetrician/Gynecologist and assistant clinical professor for the University of California at Los Angeles said it would be impossible for a newborn to be delivered holding such a device because there would be no way for the IUD to get inside the amniotic sac.

Dr. Sophie Yen spoke to Associated Press in an email over the case regarding Lucy Tyler's son's birth and I quote " it would be impossible for the baby to be born holding the IUD because the fetus grows within an amniotic sac and the IUD can't get in that.

Obstetricians at the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology (OB/GYN) say that "while it is possible to get pregnant while using an IUD, it is extremely rare. In the first year of women use, fewer than 1% of women using IUD will get pregnant".

We know now that even with the IUD contraceptive inserted, a woman can be pregnant but it is on rare occasions.
The claims about kids holding the IUD at birth are nothing but some fairy tale.
