A TALE OF TWO SONS

A great man there once was
Who was rich and powerful
His barns were ever filled with crops
And his winepresses of choice wine
His farms so fertile produced abundant crops
And his herds boast of enviable livestock

He had two sons
And unto himself called he them one day
"Oh, ye sons of mine
There are certain valuable things of mine
Which I must now commit into your hands
Do with them as you deem fit
And let the level of your discretion be proven in this"

And when the two sons were shown
The valuable possessions of their father
They found only a few seeds and a cow
"Are these the valuable things father spoke of?
But these are only a handful of seeds and a cow
As rich and powerful as father is
Is this not the most expensive joke?
To call these little things precious"
So, they wondered to each other

Nonetheless, they knew they must not fail their father
And the first son, not willing to disappoint his father
Or lose his precious things
Decided to hide the seeds where no man would find them
Also, did he forbid anything, both man and beast
From coming close to the cow
"For I must protect father's valuable's and not fail him"
So, he told himself

But the second son
Full of love for daring adventures
Decided not to keep his father's valuable things
Instead dug he the soil and sowed the seeds
And his cow he did allow
To mate freely with the bulls of the field
"For let me see what these will bring"
So, he thought daringly

And so it was that as time progressed
The first son went to check on his seeds
Where he had hidden them
But he was shocked to learn
That the seeds had been destroyed by weevils
And the cow too had fallen sick and died
"How do I explain this to father?
That I couldn't keep his valuable things"

But when he checked on his brother
His own seeds had multiplied and produced a rich harvest
And his cow too had borne calves and increased
"How did you do it?
Asked he his brother
And his brother told him
"You were concerned about saving what father trusted you with
But I was concerned with multiplying it"
And the first son knew he had failed his father's test.
