News of Tinubu facing physical and psychological attacks in the North is all over the internet. Some people have claimed that it's Atiku supporters that are behind it while others say it is due to North's unbridled desire to hold on to power at all costs. However, both claims are wrong! If it is because of North's desperation to hold to power, then why is Peter Obi not experiencing same treatment?

Investigations have shown that it has nothing to do with holding to power or based on ethnocentric sentiments but due to Tinubu's track record of bigotry and ethnocentrism.

Here is the root cause of anger against Tinubu in the Muslim parts of North:

In 1999, Tinubu encouraged attacks on Hausas in Shagamu that led to many deaths and colossal destruction to properties.

How it happened:

Yorubas planned to celebrate Oro festival, they stated that no female must come out during the period. Hausas in Shagamu claimed it's an infringement on their basic rights since they're in their own settler community. However, during the Oro festival, two female Hausas who were outside were killed by Yoruba youths. The Hausas retaliated and were having the upper hand. News got to Lagos about what was happening in Shagamu, Tinubu encouraged and provided logistics support to OPC and encouraged them to intervene. OPC moved into Shagamu and attacked the police station in the town before they commenced their onslaught on Hausas. By the time the dust settled, many Hausas were massacred and their properties totally destroyed.

After the incident, instead of acting like an elderstatesman and governor of a state. Tinubu called a press conference where he humiliated the Hausas further by asking them to return to the jungle they came from if they can't respect the culture of the indigenous people. An Islamic cleric who had Intel on Tinubu's direct involvement in the crises vowed to expose him. Incidentally, he was murdered soon after!

Coupled with another attack on Ijaws in Ajegunle by same OPC, Obasanjo realized that allowing such ethnic militia to continue existing could push Nigeria into another civil war. So he ordered the army to move into Lagos and shoot any OPC member at sight. Fredrick Faseun and the other leader of OPC (I have forgotten his name but he is very dark with oblong head) vowed to resist Obasanjo but when they realized that Obasanjo was serious with his order following the killing of OPC members and dumping of their bodies in burrow pits, they went all went into hiding.

These leaders of OPC never forgave Obasanjo. They saw him as a sellout. However, Obasanjo was a true elderstatesman. A patriotic Nigerian who saw the dangers ahead and nipped it in the bud.

After the incident, there was a massive effort to cover up the incident to avoid escalation. Remember, Nigeria just returned to democracy. Luckily for them, the internet and social media was not yet available, so they succeeded in covering it up.......

Disrespecting a sitting President from the North might also be part of it...

What opened the wounds of this hitherto forgotten sad experience on the side of the Hausas was another ugly experience that happened recently in Lagos.
