There were 5 Major candidates in 1979. One Igbo, one yoruba and 3 northerners. There are 4 major candidates in 2023. One Igbo, one yoruba and 2 northerners. The major northern candidate in 1979 (Shagari) had an Igbo running mate. The major northern candidate in 2023 (Atiku) has an Igbo running mate. The yoruba candidate in 1979 (Awolowo) was a Christian who ran a Christian-Christian ticket with an Igbo Christian (Philip Umeadi). The yoruba candidate in 2023 is a Muslim who is running a muslim-muslim ticket with a northern Muslim. The igbo candidate in 1979 is from Anambra and had a Muslim northerner running mate. The Igbo candidate in 2023 is also from Anambra and has a Muslim northerner running mate. The second strongest contender from the north in 1979 was very strong in kano and won kano. North used to be together despite their religious diversity that's why shagari won, today the reverse is the case.. The monolithic north is now a history.. Middle belt, especially Christian middle bellt are now looking down southwards ... You can't be killing people everyday, threatening to take over their lands and expect them to remain United with you... Obi will win this election... Take that to the bank ... 1 Like
