Principals of secondary schools in Ekiti State now face mass transfer, following thier failure in an examination administered to them by the state government.

Nigerian Tribune gathered that the affected principals had been directed to hand over to area education officers (AEOs) in their respective council areas, ahead of their transfer.

The poor performance of the principals in the examination was said to have informed the transfer, but other sources informed the Nigerian Tribune that it was part of the plan by the state government to scrap junior secondary schools in the state.

Governor Kayode Fayemi had announced at a recent media interaction in Ado-Ekiti, the state capital, that when schools would resume later this month, there would be no junior secondary schools anymore.

The principals of the junior secondary schools, it was reported, would be subsumed in the various schools, though it was being rumoured that the principals had been sacked.

But the state secretary of the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT), Mr Akin Ojo, in a telephone interview, said what he heard was that some of the principals had been served with notices of transfer and were told to hand over to their AEOs.

Ojo said the state NUT would make its position on the matter known, after a meeting over the issue today.

He hinted that the “sorting and the issues as they are now have caused the postponmemt of resumption date by one week.”
