UN Approves Resolution Calling For Russia To Leave Ukraine by adamusuleiman1: 10:39pm On Feb 23, 2023
UNITED NATIONS (AP) — The U.N. General Assembly approved a nonbinding resolution Thursday that calls for Russia to end hostilities in Ukraine and withdraw its forces, sending a strong message on the eve of the first anniversary of the invasion that Moscow’s aggression must end.

The resolution, drafted by Ukraine in consultation with its allies, passed 141-7, with 32 abstentions.

Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba said it was more evidence it’s not only the West that backs his country.

“The support is much broader, and it will only continue to be consolidated and to be solidified,” Kuleba said after the vote. “This vote defies the argument that the global south does not stand on Ukraine’s side because many countries representing Latin America, Africa, Asia voted in favor today.”

The General Assembly has become the most important U.N. body dealing with Ukraine because the Security Council, which is charged with maintaining international peace and security, is paralyzed by Russia’s veto power. Its resolutions are not legally binding, unlike Security Council resolutions, but serve as a barometer of world opinion.

The seven countries voting against it were Belarus, Mali, Nicaragua, Russia, Syria, North Korea and Eritrea. The resolution was adopted after amendments proposed by Belarus that would have stripped much of the language were resoundingly defeated.

The vote was slightly below the highest total for the five previous resolutions approved by the 193-member world body since Russia sent troops and tanks across the border into its smaller neighbor on Feb. 24, 2022. That tally, in an October resolution against Russia’s illegal annexations, won approval by 143 countries.

Foreign ministers and diplomats from more than 75 countries addressed the assembly during two days of debate, with many urging support for the resolution that upholds Ukraine’s territorial integrity, a basic principle of the U.N. Charter that all countries must subscribe to when they join the world organization.

The war has killed tens of thousands on both sides and has reduced entire cities to ruins and its impact has been felt worldwide in higher food and fuel costs and rising inflation.

Germany’s Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock asked countries that claim “that by arming Ukraine, we are pouring oil into the fire” why Western nations would do that.

“The West didn’t want or choose the war and would rather focus all its energy and money on fixing schools, fighting the climate crisis or strengthening social justice,” she told the assembly. “But the truth is: If Russia stops fighting, this war ends. If Ukraine stops fighting, Ukraine ends.”

Putin wouldn't listen. He is still too busy recruiting college students to go and become manure for wheat and sunflower plants in Ukraine.

When will USA leave Germany Japan Taiwan Iraq Syria Libya and other occupied countries? I remember when iraq people and government asked USA to leave. USA threatened them with sanctions and even threaten UN nations that supported such drafted documents of Iraq. USA really set a very bad example now it hypocritical to ask Russia to leave Ukraine when Ukrainian Nazis government has been killing Russians of Ukrainian state for 8yrs. Not possible.

I only feel sorry for those losing their lives in this Putin's foolish war of ego.

Putin keeps sending husbands, wives, boyfriends, girlfriends, and teenagers to their death in Ukraine, while he and his family enjoys themselves in Moscow.

I also feel bad for East Africans that buy and eat a lot of wheat based produce from that region of the world.

You should be feeling bad for Ukrainians being dragged and forced into conscription to death, by Ukrainian Nazis government. Those are the people who need your sympathy.

Global condemnation of Putin's illegal invasion. What a surprise that this isn't in the FP.

Meanwhile, some of the bots in here if they ever put their foot into Russia:

My brother the US has always been like that, In 1980 the US boycotted the Moscow Olympic games held in Russia, the reason for this was the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan which started in 1979, they dragged so many nations along with them including Britain and Australia. They prevented and threatened their own athlets from participating.

Britain and Australia however sent their Athletes to Olympic thereby making the US to look stupid before the Russians, even with the protests, boycotting and sanctions against the Soviets it still didn't stopped the invasion which ended after Soviet withdrawal from Afghanistan in 1989.

In 2001 the US invaded Afghanistan and Iraq in 2003, and left those countries in ruins, they manipulated the British into the war, there was protest all over the world following the US invasion including in US cities, but there was no sanctions against the US.

What the US is trying to achieve is simply to bring down any potential rival and sustain Unipolarism, they forgets that empires rises and fall and that is how it has always and would always be.

Let USA remove her troops from Iraq and Syria.
Those nations have been protecting for USA troops to leave.
Where was the U.N. when NATO destroyed Libya, Iraq and Somalia.

The USA should lead by example a withdraw their troops from allover the places they invaded and destroyed. They should also allow Cuba to have a military alliance with Russia. Then we know they are serious.

Russia won't withdraw any troops from Ukraine until they have achieved their goals which is demilitarisation of Nazis in Ukraine. Russia is ready for a long battle , when NATO gets tired they know what to do grin grin grin

...and WHO is UnitedNations ? Even FELA use dem sing.

remove the WEST from the picture, and everyOne would condemn Russia's invasion of Ukraine. But then again, when you remove the WEST from the picture, Russia wouldn't have had any reason to inVade Ukraine in the first place.

The fact that India abstained from this time-wasting exercise is surprising to me.

Even China abstained and it is not surprising because of the rapidly growing relationship between the two.

The u.s never wanted a relationship between Russia and china. But guess what?

They got a Russia-China-India relationship.

During the initial phase of the war, India and china being blind at that time, especially India, were clamoring for PEACE.
But after seeing the desperation of the west especially the u.s. They had to join forces with Russia, because if Russia fall which is unlikely, they'll be the next in line.

There has always been relations between Russia-China-India. people who see themselves in similar circumstances would of course form some sort of alliance / relationship and historically, there has always been one among Russia-China-India.

An employer who's mean to his/her employees would unintentionally bring them closer, and a Husband who's mean to his Wife and/ or Kids, would unintentsionally bring the Wife & Kid(s) closer to themselves, and farther away from Him.
