What Is Jiu Jitsu? An Introduction To Brazilian Jiu Jitsu by Salman333(m): 1:29pm On Mar 02, 2023
Jiu Jitsu is a martial art that originated in Japan and was later developed in Brazil. The art is focused on grappling and ground fighting, and it is a highly effective form of self-defense.
The History of Jiu Jitsu
Jiu Jitsu was developed in Japan during the Sengoku period (1467-1603). It was used as a method of self-defense by the Samurai, who were the warriors of the time. Jiu Jitsu techniques were designed to allow smaller, weaker fighters to overcome larger opponents using leverage and joint locks.

In the early 1900s, Jiu Jitsu was brought to Brazil by Mitsuyo Maeda, a Japanese Jiu Jitsu master. Maeda taught Jiu Jitsu to Carlos Gracie, who then passed the art on to his brothers, including Helio Gracie.
The Gracie family continued to develop and refine Jiu Jitsu, creating what is now known as Brazilian Jiu Jitsu.
What is Brazilian Jiu Jitsu?
Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (BJJ) is a form of Jiu Jitsu that focuses on ground fighting and submissions. It is a highly effective form of self-defense, especially for smaller, weaker individuals.

BJJ techniques involve grappling and joint locks, as well as chokes and other submission holds. The art emphasizes technique and leverage over brute strength, allowing practitioners to overcome larger opponents.

In BJJ, the goal is to control and submit your opponent using various techniques. These techniques can be used in both sport and self-defense contexts.
How is BJJ Practiced?
BJJ is typically practiced in a gi, which is a traditional uniform worn in martial arts. The gi allows for a greater range of techniques, including grips and holds on the fabric of the gi.

BJJ classes typically involve drilling techniques with a partner, as well as sparring. During sparring, practitioners roll with one another, attempting to submit their opponent while avoiding being submitted themselves.

BJJ is a highly technical art that requires a great deal of practice and dedication. It is not only an effective form of self-defense but also a great way to improve physical fitness and mental well-being.
