Hong Kong's Science and Technology Innovation Financing
The government is pursuing a new direction of economic development that is focused on innovation and technology. It is a strategic goal that is expected to help the city retain its global leading position in economic growth.

A key part of this focus is a commitment to investing in critical infrastructure that is essential for the development of an innovation and technology ecosystem. Among these essentials are:

- Research and development, collaboration and commercialisation capabilities.
- A strong base of talent.

The Hong Kong government has established a number of programmes to bolster these capabilities and ensure that Hong Kong is on the forefront of scientific innovation in Asia.

In particular, it has facilitated the establishment of the Institute for Translational Research (ITR) to support biotech companies in bringing their research to market faster.

This is a very important area of innovation financing because it supports the goal of the FSDC of seeing more Hong Kong biotech start-ups commercialise their research and sell their products and services to patients in the GBA or international markets.

A major challenge in achieving this goal is the lack of early-stage funding and support for commercialisation.

To address this issue, the Hong Kong Science Park Corporation was formed in 2001 to serve as a catalyst for high-tech startups in emerging fields such as artificial intelligence (AI), robotics and Internet of Things.

The Science Park has already seen a number of successful home-grown unicorns, including logistics behemoth Lalamove, smart-manufacturing pioneer SmartMore and AI leader SenseTime.
