OUT OF FEAR OF ELECTORAL DEFEAT, AGENTS OF PEOPLES DEMOCRATIC PARTY (PDP) CONTAMINATED RICE IN AKWA IBOM STATE

Gentlemen of the Press,

Now that the Governorship and State Houses of Assembly elections are a few days away, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Akwa Ibom State has been thrown into “panic mode”. The highpoint in series of interventions targeted at luring voters is the distribution of what clearly appears to be contaminated rice. It is strongly suspected that the rice must be part of the COVID-19 consignment delivered to the State as palliative which were never distributed but stashed away under heavy security in some warehouse in the Osongama area of Uyo city.

We recall that on 12 June 2020, Governor Udom Emmanuel announced that 510 out of the 1800 bags of rice donated by the Federal Government as palliative were discarded as “unfit for consumption”. It is doubtful if they were destroyed at all. Speaking on the issue at the time, Dr. Emmanuel Ekuwem said the rice was subjected to “thorough laboratory test procedure” when it was noticed that “some grains of the rice had obvious de-colouration(sic) …”.

Gentlemen, the rice we have seen being distributed by agents of the PDP nay Akwa Ibom State Government to lure voters are not only “coloured” but are fetid and clearly unfit for human consumption. This is poison being administered in the guise of food.

It is necessary to raise this alarm to alert the public and food regulatory agencies of government of this clear danger to public health on the altar of desperate politics. For the avoidance of doubts, we call on National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC), Federal Ministry of Health and the World Health Organisation to intervene. We have collected large samples of this poisonous ration for immediate scientific procedures.

A government which has failed to make appreciable impact in the area of public health should not put the people in harm’s way in a desperate bid to self-perpetuate.

We call on all those who have received the contaminated rice to trash them forthwith and reject those who brought them.

An empathetic government will provide food for the people and not poison. They will teach them how to engage in meaningful enterprises and be self-sustaining rather than starving them to the point where contaminated rice mixed with chaff and husk which is only suitable as roughage for livestock is fed to them.

This contaminated rice would have only been useful to feed the Mexican cows if they had finally arrived their 8 year-old investment journey.
