Many millions have been invested by Paris Saint-Germain to build a team that can compete at the highest level of the biggest international club competition, the Champions League.


Big stars have signed for the French team and there have been countless changes on the bench too, but it still hasn't worked.

Neither the money nor the big names have achieved the goal. On the contrary, it seems that their spending is not synonymous with a competitive team.

This current PSG squad have exited at the last 16, losing to Bayern Munich despite having the two stars of the World Cup final leading their line in Lionel Messi and Kylian Mbappe, as well as other top players such as Neymar (even if he was injured), Sergio Ramos, Marquinhos, Achraf Hakimi, Gianluigi Donnarumma, Marco Verratti, Presnel Kimpembe and Vithina.


PSG's big spending

Over the past decade, PSG's economic investment has been spectacular, as they have spent 1,400 million dollars on transfers alone.

This amount does not include the salaries of the players, nor the countless bonuses paid to agents. That's important because PSG also have the highest wage bill in the sports world.

According to L'Equipe, they spend 629m dollars on wages, accounting for 37 percent of the salaries in Ligue

Looking back at the last 10 years, the results haven't been good at all for the French club apart from when they finished runners-up in the coronavirus Champions League in 2020.

2020/21: Eliminated in the semi-finals vs Manchester City

2019/20: Lost the final vs Bayern Munich

2018/19: Eliminated in the Last 16 vs Manchester United

2017/18: Eliminated in the Last 16 vs Real Madrid

2016/17: Eliminated in the Last 16 vs Barcelona

2015/16: Eliminated in the quarter-finals vs Manchester City

2014/15: Eliminated in the quarter-finals vs Barcelona

2013/14: Eliminated in the quarter-finals vs Chelsea FC

2012/13: Eliminated in the quarter-finals vs Barcelona
