Nigerian universities extend resumption to March 21

Some Nigerian universities have shifted their resumption date to Tuesday, March 21, 2023.

Recall that the Federal Government directed all Universities and Inter-University Centres to shut down and academic activities suspended from February 22 to March 14 over the February 25 and March 11, 2023, general elections.

However, the schools decided to extend the break after the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) shifted the March 11 election to March 18.

A statement signed by the University of Lagos on Friday, March 10, 2023, stated that the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Folasade Ogunsola, approved that the resumption of academic activities be postponed to Tuesday, March 21, 2023, adding that all other activities of the university, including inaugural lectures and meetings (excluding teaching), should continue as scheduled.

It explained that the postponement of resumption to Tuesday, March 21, 2023, was due to the re-scheduling of the governorship and state House of Assembly elections from Saturday, March 11, 2023, to Saturday, March 18, 2023.

It read, “It would be recalled that the federal government had directed that students of higher institutions across the country should vacate their schools ahead of the 2023 general elections. As a result, the University Senate had approved the suspension of academic activities (teaching) from Tuesday, February 21, 2023, to Tuesday, March 14, 2023.

“Once again, members of the university community are implored to remain safe and security conscious as well as orderly, civil and responsible in utterances and engagements, online and offline.

“Further updates would be provided as the need arises in the coming days.”

Similarly, the management of Godfrey Okoye University (GOUNI) in Enugu has shifted the institution’s resumption date to March 21.

In a statement on Thursday, Christian Anieke, GOUNI’s vice-chancellor, said the institution will no longer resume on March 15 as earlier scheduled.

“They said the shift in the resumption of academic activities by the students had been approved by the Senate of the University. The students are now expected to resume on March 21st for the second semester of the 2022/2023 academic session,” he said.

The vice-chancellor said the move was to allow students of the institution to participate in the elections.

Anieke said the senate of the university did not want a situation where the students would resume and then return to places they registered to cast their votes on election day.

The vice-chancellor informed the students that there would not be another break once they return on March 21.

He said the institution would operate three months of uninterrupted teaching followed by examinations as soon as students return to the campus.
