The Importance Of Gamification In Education by skidos2021: 9:52am On Mar 15, 2023
Gamification in education refers to the incorporation of gaming elements into education. Gamification in education involves using game mechanics, such as points, badges, leaderboards, and quests, to make learning more engaging, interesting, and motivating. Gamification in education has gained significant attention in recent years due to its potential to enhance student motivation, engagement, and learning outcomes. According to a survey by MDR Education, 83% of K-12 teachers use games or simulations in their classrooms, with 64% reporting that games are effective in improving student learning outcomes. Gamification is important in education as it helps children learn through play. An educational game is one of the best examples of gamification in education. Educational games (also called learning games) are interactive applications that impart knowledge about particular topics and enhance children’s skills. Educational games are available on, but not limited to, android or iOS devices. Educational games help children learn better and remove learning obstacles. These games have gaming elements where children aim for rewards as they finish tasks and progress through their course or lesson plan. Educational games are available for children of all ages. Learning games for toddlers, learning games for 4 year olds, learning games for 5 year olds, and learning games for grade schoolers are all available online. Spelling city games are some of the best examples of educational games.

Several studies and surveys show that parents, teachers, and children believe that educational games and gamification really help. For example, a study by the Entertainment Software Association found that 74% of parents believe that educational video games are more effective at teaching their children compared to traditional methods. Another survey conducted by McGraw Hill Education found that 81% of students believe that gamification helps them learn, while 90% of teachers believe that gamification improves student motivation.

Here are the three main reasons why gamification and particularly educational games are important for education.

1.Gamification in education increases motivation among children. One of the main reasons children lose interest in learning is the lack of motivation. Some educational topics can be mundane and boring, but by incorporating game elements into the learning process, children are more likely to get interested and remain engaged in learning. Gamification makes learning more fun and exciting. Educational games provide children with immediate positive feedback, reward them for their achievements, and encourage them to achieve their goals.

2.Gamification in education can enhance student engagement in classrooms. One of the critical factors that affect learning and retention of information is student engagement. By incorporating gaming elements, teachers and educators can keep students engaged in the learning process as they participate in activities that are interactive and challenging. Introducing children to gamification from an early age encourages them to explore, experiment, and take risks, which promotes learning. Learning games for 4 year olds and learning games for 5 year olds are great gamification tools to increase children’s motivation and engagement from a young age.

3. Gamification in education improves learning outcomes. Research has shown that gamification can significantly enhance learning outcomes such as knowledge retention, comprehension, and application of learned concepts. According to a study (Yıldırım & Demir, 2016), “students who have experienced a gamified approach to education said that they enjoyed the process. They also pointed out that it reinforced the knowledge they gained previously. It enabled them to communicate and engage in friendly competition with their fellow students as well”.

By incorporating game elements, students are encouraged to interact with the material actively, which leads to better understanding and recall. Gamification also allows students to apply what they have learned in real-world scenarios, which helps them develop critical thinking and problem-solving skills. Most of all, gamification and educational games like spelling city games offer a positive learning environment. Children learn and retain better in stress-free and positive environments where they are able to take risks and make mistakes.
