Boko Haram ‘Obasanjo’s visit to prevent attack on Ota Farm’

• It is a lie –former president

The secret and surprise visit of former president, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo, to family members of the leader of Boko Haram, Ustaz Mohammed Yusuf, followed a threat by the Islamic sect that his investments, including Otta Farm, would be the next target of attack, a Maiduguri based source has said.

The threat, according to the source who pleaded anonymity, has been a source of concern to the former president, hence his trip to Maidiuguri, Borno State, where he met the family of Yusuf and appealed to the group to stop the spate of bombing. But in a swift reaction, Mr. Taiwo Ojo, a Special Assistant to the former president, denied the claim saying there was no threat of attack on Ota Farm or any investment by Obasanjo. Rather, Ojo stressed, the visit to the family of the late leader of Boko Haram was borne out of the desire of Obasanjo, as a national leader, to ensure that peace reigns in Nigeria.

Meanwhile, a representative of Human Rights Commission, Alhaji Shehu Sani, has disclosed that he facilitated Obasanjo’s visit to Mohammed Yusuf’s family. Speaking in an interview on the British Broadcasting Corporation(BBC), Hausa Service in Abuja, he said that he was the person that arranged the visit with a view to bringing dialogue and understanding between the government and families of the sect members who were extra- judicially killed in Maiduguri a July, 2009 uprising. In an interview with newsmen in Maiduguri , the son of the late Ba Fugu, Alhaji Babakura Fugu, admitted that Obasanjo had visited members of the family, where he promised to take all the matters discussed to the federal government.
