Alamieyeseigha: God Has Forgiven Me

FROM WILLIE ETIM (YENEGOA)

FORMER Bayelsa State governor, Dr Diepreye Alamieyeseigha yesterday returned home to a rousing welcome in Yenegoa, the state capital and his hometown, Amassoma. The former governor prayed for forgiveness for his enemies, just as he said God had forgiven him.
During a courtesy call on Governor Timipre Sylva at Government House shortly after his arrival, Alamieyeseigha thanked God for being alive.

At a civic reception in Amassoma, he apologised to all that he might have offended knowingly or unknowingly. While pledging his loyalty to the Nigerian State, the former governor however said he would continue to fight for the Ijaw cause.

Alamieyeseigha, who was incarcerated for over eight months in the custody of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) for fraud and money laundering charges, was overwhelmed by the large crowd that gathered to welcome him back home after his ordeal. He thanked the people for what he called the show of love and support.

Flanked by former Senate President Adulphus Wabara, Alliance for Democracy (AD) presidential candidate in the last election, Chief Pere Ajuwa and former Speaker of the state House of Assembly Boyelayefa Debekeme, Alamieyeseigha praised President Umaru Musa Yar'Adua and Vice President Goodluck Jonathan for their efforts at moving Nigeria forward.

He commended the President for listing the development of the Niger Delta on his seven-point agenda and pledged to work assiduously towards the attainment of peace, stability and justice in the country.
Alamieyeseigha said he had forgiven all those who must have contributed one way or the order to his removal as governor, insisting that he had resolved to put behind him all that had happened in the past and approach life with a new and the fear of God.

To this end, he said: " I equally have a covenant with God to forgive and forget all persons who might have hurt me knowingly or unknowingly just as I have obtained forgiveness from the creator over my own failings. The difficulties of the past months have only underscored our fallibility as human beings and brought to the fore, the need for a spiritual rebirth. It was a period of intense cogitation during which I went through spiritual soul searching and rejuvenation, which have brought me much closer to the creator."

According to him, what transpired over the last two years was ordained by God but that while in his sick bed, he had made a covenant with God, to give him the strength and the wisdom to selflessly serve Nigeria.
Alamieyeseigha said there was hardly any endeavour more glorious than serving one's people and country. "As I emerge from the dungeons, I do so with a renewed sense of responsibility and dedication," he said. "This is no time for recriminations, of unnecessary brooding over developments that we as humans have no control over."

He lamented that the Niger Delta had become embroiled in an orgy of violence and rebellion, in which precious lives were being lost while kidnappings, hostage taking, oil pipeline vandalisation among other socio-economic vices, were the order of the day.

Reiterating that the set back in the Niger Delta region was the fallout of many years of resource exploitation and abject neglect of the rights and welfare of the people, the former governor blamed both the rich multinational oil companies and previous governments for such neglect.
According to him, the crystallization of the Niger Delta crisis into a national problem could have been avoided if proper measures had been taken to provide basic amenities in the area.

In his speech, chairman of the occasion and presidential candidate of the Alliance for Democracy (AD) in the last general elections, Chief Pere Ajuwa said the 'spirits of the Ijaw" were behind Alamieyesegha, stressing that the Ijaw would continue to agitate for their rights until justice was done to them. "We will not hand it over to anybody. God in heaven will see to it that we don't hand it over to anybody," Ajuwa declared.

Former Senate President Adolphus Wabara said he had come as representative of his people to welcome Chief Alamieyeseigha. " I am sure that if by tomorrow this event is aired, most Nigerians, particularly the dark ones, will be shocked by the rousing welcome Alamieyeseigha received," he observed.

In a welcome address read by one time commissioner for Finance, Mr Solomon Apreala the Amassoma community described Alamieyeseigha as a great son and the day as a memorable one.

Alamieyeseigha, who had earlier been received by Governor Timipre Sylva at the Government House was received by an unprecedented crowd at Amassoma for the event which was billed for 2pm but started at about 5.30pm.

Now you can see how hopeless our situation is as Nigerians.

Unprecedented crowd, former Senate President, Presidential Aspirant, a former Speaker of a State House of Assembly and a former Commissioner of Finance all turning up to welcome back a thief, ex-convict, extremely corrupt leader angry

Our situation is really bad in this country. Our mindset is exteremely corrupt so much that we now worship money as god of gods. All a man needs to have is loadz of money and he will be worshipped like a god. It doesn't matter how the money is acquired.

Nigerians are indeed their own worst nightmare and greatest problem.
We are simply not yet ready to move forward.

funloving,
u are as funny as ur name.
who made alams a thief? ribadu?
where is tony annenih and who is he? a patrotic nigerian?
where is obj and who is he? a quality leader?
can't u ask urself, how many govs were involved since the past eight years?
Dariye had the same money laundary case in the same london and he even attacked the efcc in platue and thought them the lessons of their lives and what has happened since then?
pls tell me, how come it is barely 3 months since the end of the past administration and yet more than 30 govs are yet to visit the court for the funds of their states yet reports have it that most of these states are indebted.
why not ask how come among all the ministers in the eight years, non is accused of corrupt practices. how come most of the obj contracts have been cancelled or withdrawn yet obj is not corrupt.
why is that contacts given and paid for were left unattended to with no one been guest to ur efcc?
don't u know that official corruption got to its record height during obj's administration yet there is an able efcc.
who is more corrupt than IBB? why was abacha made the only corrupt past president?
alams had only paid a price but take ur mind off the fact that he is corrupt because all of them are as efcc cannot tell nigerians that they do not know the way about of all state funds.
if u are angry that alams was welcomed in bayesa then what about andy uba? was his money laundary case talked about at all?
the name of the game is " selected justice"

This is one of the most disgraceful acts i have ever witnessed. That a thief who plead guilty to multiple counts of embezzlement and corruption will receive a hero's welcome from the same people who he robbed! NO disrespect, but have people in Ijaw land gone nuts? Read all the fanfare that greeted this thief and you will see that THERE IS SOMETHING INHERENTLY WRONG IN NIGERIA AND WITHIN NIGERIANS. How can someone who brazenly stole millions from his people still be addressed as a kingmaker and hero among them. Are people blind? are they stupid? What explanation can you give to this?
Childcris said Anenih, Obasanjo among others are honored ( which they dont deserve), but at least these guys are not convicted criminals. Alams is an ex-convict who stole from his own people. Period. For his same people to troop out and give him a hero's welcome is the most disgraceful stunt ever pulled by a huger Nigerian public. Shame!
Re: Supreme Thief Alams Gets An Overwhelming Welcome From His People by funloving(m): 4:50pm On Sep 01, 2007
Some people might want to argue that it was a rented crowd that came to welcome him,but in this case that won't be true.
The master criminal visited the Bayelsa State Governeor. Adolphus Wabara, who was himself impeached for corruption, visited to represent 'his people'. The Ibos should quickly disown Wabara and publicly announce that he was neither sent to represent them nor was he representing Ibos, otherwise others will begin to think Wabara and his Ibo folks are also in support of the rogue.

I really don't know what his wrong with Nigerians, but my Ijaw folks have certainly broken the record on this one. Rousing welcome for a man that stole so much from you and left you with absolutely nothing. Where is MEND, NDPVF and the other pretenders who claim to be fighting for Ijaw emacipation ? What have they to say to this ?

Sometimes one feels like giving up on Nigerians.
It is going to be very difficult to help Nigerians out of their shit because as you try to that, the very people you are trying to help will turn around and slam you, making it clear they don't need your help.
I guess we are just fine the way we are, forget the mass nationwide complaints of poverty, unemployment and coruption.

A lot of you talking have lost touch with the Nigerian situation. Selective Justice amounts to an aberration; the ordinary man on the street cannot understand the grammer you people are saying. In the University of Port Harcourt, there is a plaque showing the contribution of ALAMS to the infrastructural development of the place besides other monies he gave to do other things, same with Odili and Ebitimi Banigo plus Dan Etete. This people will always be giving red carpet treatment whenever they come here even if a COURT in HELL finds them guilty. What infrastructural development have you guys running mouth done in we country?

Methink Alams is innocent of many of the charges brought against him by the EFCC and OBJ at the time. As I see it, all of his dressing as a woman to escape from London, tummy tuck and all other bull crap are the handiwork of people who were paid to ''rubbish'' the name of Alams when OBJ was the Lord in the Manor.

What makes you think it wouldn't be true? Don't you realise it is easy to mobilise unemployed people with a bit of money and lots of fake promises, in order to get them to stand in line and wave for the cameras? Have you forgotten the one-million man march 'rent-a-crowd' gimmick, that ruled the airwaves in the days of Abacha?

It is very dishearthening when certain comments are made. Let me try and be simple, it is in a malfunctional environment that such happens.

@ ono the man has pleaded guilty and you are saying you believe he is innocent, maybe you know better than him. You and otokx are about the loudest voices in here on Niger Delta issues and it is always shocking when you guys make statements. One time it was Ibori was the best performing governor and in your opinions should be considered for president.

What is it with having and respecting integrity that is difficult to understand, with such behaviours how do you deter Omeiha and the others from following the trends of Ibori and Odili, if the "educated" ones dont condem in strong terms such acts what do you expect the so called "common man" on the streets to do.

These crooks should be exposed and treated as outkast, they are as bad if not worse than the armed robbers that kill.

@ Akolawale though its on a light note, but thats really unnecessary. He expressed a personal opinion and in no way did he say he was expressing the views of any particular section of the country.

No need truning this into a tribal debate, it should be on issues, on how to treat the crooks of leadership that are exposed.

how many people confess to things they did not do in nigeria especially under the hard hands of nigerian police?
what is the difference between the money laundary case against alams, Dariye and Andy Uba? and what punishments were melted on each an everyone of them? how many constitutions are in place in nigeria?
what of atiku's confession that he did but alongside our able obj?
what about turaki's confession?
what happened to Chris Uba's confession b4 obj that he rigged anambra's election to install ngige?
all these questions are here to address the issue of confession.
if we must call a spade a spade, in fighting corruption, the constitution shld be at work to spell out punishments of offenders.
if death sentence is a punishment for a drunkard let it be for all.
Re: Supreme Thief Alams Gets An Overwhelming Welcome From His People by debosky(m): 10:39pm On Sep 04, 2007
what are you trying to say? that they coerced him into confessing?

or was it the NPF that made him steal 1 million pounds in his stolen house in England? or Chelsea hotel? or all the others?

please clarify what you mean sir.

by the way, one more comment - the guilt or lack of prosecution of one man in NO WAY negates that of another. If you are caught, you pay the price. whether others have been prosecuted or not is besides the point.
Re: Supreme Thief Alams Gets An Overwhelming Welcome From His People by buluti(m): 10:42pm On Sep 04, 2007
@ chidichris so OBJ is now a court of adequate and competent jurisdiction where confessions and admission of crimes are made.

Thanx debosky for the piece, this mindset of "everyone is corrupt" is affecting a lot of folks.

Nice one. So many questions begging for answers.

Lets all be objective for once. That Alams stole while he was at Creek Haven is a fact that's known to all Naija people, and his fellow thieves at the time.

I personally don't listen to the accuser alone before drawing a line. I also love to hear the accused too to get a grip on what actually transpired between the two.

I have always known that Alams will be freed one day. What I didn't know was ''when'' I wanted to read his own side of the travails he was subjected to by Federal authorities under OBJ. He has done just that. It's left for sensible people to read up his statements, look at them in the light of all that happened two years back and draw a line.

I have done this and I believe that Alams would have served his terms fully as Governor in Bayelsa if he had supported OBJ's third term ambition - even if that does not come to fruition at the end of the day. I don't doubt the fact that he stole. But that he stole so much, as depicted by EFCC is what I don't believe. But then, that's my personal opinion.
Re: Supreme Thief Alams Gets An Overwhelming Welcome From His People by funloving(m): 9:49am On Sep 05, 2007
It so shocking to see some people still defending Alams.
Are you people on drugs on what ?

For one moment, forget about all the other theives.Did Alams steal YOUR MONEY or did he not steal your molney ?
Simple question

The answer is YES because the man confessed to the theft and there are incontrovertible evidence against him

So why defend him on the basis of there other thieves?

There are thousands of armed robbers in Nigeria but does that mean the police shouLd not arrest, and the courts should not convict those caught until all the armed robbers in Nigeria are caught and tried ?

Ono and Co, don't let your ethnicity of the Niger Delta blind you. I am also from that region but it has not changed the fact that these so called leaders stole OUR MONEY and we should not for ANY REASON welcome them or praise them or DEFEND them.
If anything, we should reject them and make sure they never step feet on our land. We should chase them with stones and run them out of Nigeria, so they all die in exile.

Supporting them because other thieves like them have not been brought to justice smirks of not only total ignorance but a very sad state of our mindset.

A mindset of glorifying the thief as long as he is from our family, even when he steals from us and we receaive no benefit from him.

'Ono and Co,
Bros, the guy steal your money. Stone am. Stop to dey defend am unless something dey wrong with how you dey view your personal property

The people who gave Alams rousy welcome may have their reasons for doing so; most of them must have benefited from the LOOT. That man made a lot of people rich through his dubious means and he remains such boot licker's hero till date.

I do visit Bayelsa and I listen to public opinion. Many of the residents still prefer the administration of the ex-convict to that of the VP lipsrsealed
