2023 Polls: Nigeria’s Democracy Now Truly Mature — Buhari by Racoon(m): 12:26am On Mar 22, 2023
President Muhammadu Buhari on Tuesday observed that the remarkable passion towards democracy exhibited by Nigerians through the choices they made in the Presidential, National Assembly and the subsequent Governorship and State Houses of Assembly elections, is an indication that Nigeria’s democracy has truly matured.

He said given the chance of a free and fair election as well as non-interference as was witnessed in elections, citizens proved to be capable of deciding who leads them without anyone telling them what to do.
President Buhari was speaking at a farewell meeting with the outgoing United States Ambassador, Mary Beth Leonard at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

A statement issued by Garba Shehu, Senior Special Assistant to the President, Media and Publicity quoted him ad saying: “People are realising their power. Given the chance of a free and fair vote, nobody can tell them what to do. I am unhappy that some candidates lost the election.

But I am inspired by the fact that voters were able to make their own decision, to decide who won and who lost. With the currency change, there was no money to spread around but even then, I told voters to take the money and vote according to their consciences.”

He said he was completely satisfied with his role in the election process staying above it, without meddle someness or any form of interference.

The President commended the outgoing Ambassador for the enormous achievements recorded in Nigeria-US relations in the three-and-half years she had been here.

He chronicled several challenges faced by Nigeria as the country strives to unite our diverse communities and achieve national development and expressed his appreciation of the way the United States can hold together as a nation. He expressed the hope that Nigeria will continue to make progress in building a nation out of our different &competitive communities. He added that he enjoyed working with the Ambassador and wished that she had more time to serve here.

In an answer to a question posed by Ambassador Leonard, President Buhari said he planned to be a “big landlord” back at home, working his farms and tending his more than 300 animals. “I am eager to go,” said the President.

In her remarks, the American Ambassador said she was happy with the progress made in Nigeria-US relations in these three–and–half years, specifically citing the recent institution of a five-year visa regime between the two countries; active collaboration in security and the supply of military hardware including warplanes and the soon-to-come fighter helicopters; and also cooperation in the health sector to fight HIV and Covid response, giving assurances that US will continue to assist in the strengthening of Nigeria’s health sector.

Ambassador Leonard expressed her gratitude and that of the US government for the continuing role of the President in ensuring regional security and strengthening democracy as a system of government, citing his strong response against the recent surge of coups-d’état in West Africa as worthy of commendation.

She expressed hope that even as he is preparing to leave, there are still a few more things the President could do, among which she mentioned, the urgent need to remove fuel subsidies.

The United States is deeply troubled by the disturbing acts of violent voter intimidation and suppression that took place during those polls in Lagos, Kano, and other states. The use of ethnically charged rhetoric before, during, and after the gubernatorial election in Lagos was particularly concerning.

What happened in the October 1965 Western Regional elections where thugs and political urchins were used to scatter elections and snatch ballot boxes are happening again before our very eyes. It led to the fall of the First Republic. The people did not go to court but took law into their hands.

Nigeria is warped in a balloon of hatred, unhealthy tribalism, terrorism, kidnapping, division, envy and avarice. We must deflate this balloon and prevent it from bursting. Or else, what happened in Rwanda in 1994 will be a child's play.

Addressing Nigerians in a nationwide broadcast, Buhari vowed to ensure security of electorates during the polls.

I urge every citizen therefore, to go out to vote for their candidates of choice without fear, because security shall be provided and your vote shall count.

This President has always been a failure who so much glorify his failures that he has lowered the bar of bad governance. There is nothing Buhar has ever gotten right throughout the 8 years of his catastrophic reign.

Ordinary to talk to citizens, he couldn't. Yet the same hypocritical Nigerians would have the guts to even have an opinion on someone like TRUMP that was seemingly in front of the media, daily.

Remember when the north or so flooded recently, he didn't even say a word and went to FRANCE.

The Demons in Nigeria are happy that they have now replaced him with a Bigger Demon, ONE with 2 Horns, named BULABA!

If you even see that one, once a year, be happy.

This cow meat clearly isn’t aware of what happens around him, he’s just floating. The failed naira swap and the just concluded selection proves it’s further.

Someone who works in aso rock confided in me; He told me that whenever people in power presents any document to Buhari for approval, all he’ll request from you is to swear to Allah. Once you say walahi tallahi, he don sign am be that.

So he saying Nigeria’s democracy is now truly mature should not come as a shock to anyone.

Hate it or love it, President Buhari is right about Nigeria's democracy. This is the longest period we have successfully transitioned from one democratic government to another. In fact, we have seen an opposition party beat the incumbent party. All these events are signs of maturity.

However, we MUST continue to improve the electoral process, reduce voter suppression and increase citizen participation in elections.
The presidential election turnout was 17% which is probably the worst in Nigeria's history. This is not good, so we need to reduce voter apathy because politicians can only buy up people's votes when a few voters participate in elections.

Lastly, the naira redesign policy used to reduce vote-buying was a bold step. Even though it came with some harsh effects, I commend this administration for it. People must vote their conscience and not make irrational decisions because they were influenced with money - no thanks to greed and abject penury.

To me, I'm not sure this man really know what is happening in the country. Just take a look at the Naira redesign issues, he was just doing as if he was not the one who directed everything. Issuing a statement was a big problem and now these elections. Who in Nigeria doesn't know these elections have scattered previous progress made in our democracy already. Even the APC supporters know this.

Politicians are not down to earth that's why they believe that everything is ok with the people. Just like they always say that Bokoharam has been defeated, I will just be wondering, are these people actually in Nigeria?

It is a always good and refreshing to see that we have a President who does not intervene in the rule of law.

From Corruption, down to politics, Our darling Daddy always allow the rule of law to take charge...

Memory lane........
Elections In Nigeria now,
There is no need to fear.
Why? Because the will of Nigerians will not be subverted. Never! A President once told us in this country that the coming polls would be do or die.
Not with President Buhari.
Fair is fair.
No foul play.
Under his watch, his political party, the All Progressives Congress (APC) has lost gubernatorial elections in Bayelsa(now twice), Oyo State, Edo State, Zamfara state and Anambra states.

At the last Council of States meeting, Gov Willie Obiano publicly registered his appreciation to President Buhari, for the level playing ground he made available during the election in his state. With do or die apostles, and a certain political party in power, such would never happen. Not with their garrison mentality. All states are territories that must be conquered, willy-nilly.

APC has won gubernatorial positions under Buhari in Kogi, Ondo and Edo states, (Now losing same Edo again) The victories were fair and square.
The party lost in Bayelsa (twice), Zamfara, Oyo, Anambra etc.
This President would never manipulate victory for anyone, not even his own party.
And you ask us not to trust him?
We will, and no mistake.

God bless our darling Daddy President Muhammadu Buhari.
God bless Nigeria.

medropoly:
One thing I told God is that any party could win but God Abeg not APC
All because of hatred and bitterness.
The good thing is that,
God doesn't answer 'slow' prayers like this.
That is why he is God.
Shame on you.
Have you also prayed for your cownu today?!
