BOKO HARAM KILLS MEMBER WHO MET WITH OBJ

SUNDAY, 18 SEPTEMBER 2011 00:00 GBENGA AKINGBULE HITS: 233

IN what may be the loudest rejection of peace with the Nigerian state, the Boko Haram sect yesterday killed one of its arrow-heads who held a peace meeting with former President Olusegun Obasanjo.

The murder, carried by a lone man, came barely 48 hours after the peace meeting of Thursday.

Alhaji Babakura Fugu was the in-law of the groups’ slain leader, Mohammed Yusuf. Sources told Sunday Compass that Babakura was killed at about 1:30pm by a man wearing a brown long Arabian gown, who shot straight at his target who was sitting under a tree near their family house.

“After killing Babakura, he fired four times at a parked car to scare people before walking away through the way he came,” said a family member in tears.

The Boko Haram sect immediately claimed responsibility for the murder via a text message sent to the Hausa Service of the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) shortly after the incident.

Babakura, according to those who knew him, was a class teacher and the eldest son of the late Baafur Alhaji Fugu, who was killed alongside Muhammed Yusuf, during the 2009 Boko-Haram insurgency.

Sunday Compass gathered that Babakura was killed by an angry Boko-Haram member who was not happy with the Thursday meeting with Obasanjo.

The former President had visited Maiduguri, the capital city of Borno State, which is regarded as the Boko Haram hotspot to hold talks with family members of the slain leader of sect.

The family members of the late Muhammed, after their meeting with the former president claimed that they gave certain conditionalities to be met before there could be cessation of hostilities.

The family told BBC Hausa Service, monitored in Kaduna, that they obtained the approval of the top echelon of the sect to meet with Obasanjo, who insisted that the meeting be held without any security personnel. Sources say that the killing of Babakura could be a demonstration of division within the sect, as it was said that the group is sharply divided over whether or not to accept Obasanjo’s talks offer.

Fugu had told reporters after the meeting: “Obasanjo came to Maiduguri and met us in our house. He first of all introduced his person and he empathised with us over the loss of our loved ones. Obasanjo said he came to meet us personally and (to) hear our grievances and to take our grievances to President Goodluck Jonathan, so that there will be resolution of this issue once and for all.

“He also said that his coming was to see how our plights and other challenges could be overcome as a means to prove that government is indeed ready for peace.

“We discussed the issue of our houses which were demolished; then the court which ruled that we be paid damages. And we also told him that security agencies must desist from any moves to harass us by even government officials.

“Based on this agreement, Obasanjo told us that he would personally take the matter to President Goodluck Jonathan. All of us were in the meeting, including those of Muhammad Yusuf with our sister and mother of Fuji Foi who harped on the fact that his children should be mobilised to access education and better welfare.

“There will be peace if the agreement is reached. The Boko Haram members are demanding adequate compensation for those killed by security agencies and the same thing with us whose loved ones were also killed. We have faith in Obasanjo’s coming without any doubt.”
